The images of the incident captured on a mobile phone are breathtaking, but fortunately it appears that Paul Vriesman, a 17-year-old Dutch rider, the spectator, and the other athletes involved did not suffer serious consequences.
Everything happened on Sunday during the final of the four stages of the LVM Saarland Trophy, a Nations Cup race for Juniors held in Germany.
As can be seen from the images, on an unbarricaded stretch of road several enthusiasts were standing at the roadside to cheer on the riders, including a woman on a "tricycle" used by people with mobility difficulties. The woman, perhaps without realizing it, invaded the road surface with the front of her electric vehicle, causing the fall of the young Dutch rider who was moving up through the group and was thrown into the air before crashing violently onto the asphalt.
This resulted in a pile-up that involved other athletes, but it appears that none of the people involved suffered serious injuries.
For the record, the final stage of the race was won by Australian Alistair Forsyth, while the overall victory went to Norwegian Sindre Orholm-Lønseth. Vriesman, who had already been involved in a serious crash at the Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne Juniors in early March that kept him away from racing for a long time, shared a message on social media: "A bad incident, but apparently I got off relatively well and without serious injuries. It's my first week back racing after several months of rehabilitation."
