The Copenhagen Sprint confirms Belgian dominance, Jasper Philipsen won in a sprint finish the Danish classic ahead of Tobias Lund Andresen (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) and Sam Welsford (Netcompany Ineos). The finale was breathtaking and wide open, as the peloton managed to catch up with the four breakaway riders only in the final kilometer of the race, thanks in part to a massive crash 19 km from the finish.
THE RACE Second edition for the Copenhagen Sprint, the very young World Tour race that has already established itself as a true festival for sprinters. 228.2 km from Roskilde to Copenhagen where a final circuit of 10 km was tackled five times. A flat course with no climbs whatsoever, in short, tailor-made for sprinters.
Much of the day was characterized by an attack from 5 riders who broke away from the peloton in the early kilometers of the race and gained up to 2'30" of advantage: Anders Foldager (Jayco Alula), Rune Herregodts (UAE Team Emirates XRG), William Blume Levy (Team Uno X), Mads Andersen and Frederik Rodenberg (Danish National Team). In the peloton, Soudal QuickStep and Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe led the chase for a long time, but as they entered the final circuit all the sprinters' teams worked hard to contain the attack from the breakaway riders, from which Rodenberg had meanwhile lost contact.
The breakaway riders tried to resist as long as possible against the peloton's advance, also thanks to the great support from the roadside crowd. It was a truly adrenaline-fueled finale, also following a massive crash 19 km from the finish that literally split the peloton, eliminating many riders from contention such as Tim Merlier and Dylan Groenewegen. The 4 breakaway riders started the final lap with about fifteen seconds of advantage while behind them Alpecin Premier Tech and Decathlon CMA CGM did everything possible to close the gap.
The chase concluded right in the final kilometer and Jasper Philipsen managed to easily impose himself in the sprint ahead of Tobias Lund Andresen and Sam Welsford. A great return to racing for the Belgian sprinter who had been absent from competition since Paris-Roubaix, an important victory ahead of the Tour de France.
