The cycling world bids farewell to former professional Lino Carletto, 82 years old, who passed away on Saturday in Isola della Scala. Born in Vigasio on July 20, 1943, after competing in the Amateur World Championship in 1966, Carletto turned professional in September of the same year with Salamini, making his mark with an 8th place finish at the Coppa Agostoni and 12th at the Giro di Lombardia.
The following year, confirmed at Salamini, he achieved his first and only professional victory by winning the Gp Cemab in Mirandola. He also secured important placings and in his first Giro d'Italia finished 20th. In 1968 he was signed by Salvarani and competed in both the Giro and the Tour, completing both races. He was called up to the National team for the World Championships, won by Adorni, where he retired after having nonetheless made a valuable contribution to the Italian cause.
In 1969 at the Tour of Romandia he came close to victory (2nd in a stage) and contributed to Salvarani's victory in the team time trial (with Gimondi and Dalla Bona). At the Giro he was again an excellent performer, finishing in 19th place. He remained a professional for two more seasons with Salvarani, but achieved no further notable results and at the end of the 1971 season concluded his honorable career.
Lino Carletto's funeral will be held at the Parish Church of Caselle di Isola della Scala on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Our condolences go out to his wife Gabriella, his sons Felice, Paolo and Luca and their families from the tuttoBICI and tuttobiciweb editorial staff.
