CARTAGIRO. THE GIRO D'ITALIA PRESS REVIEW

GIRO D'ITALIA | 21/05/2026 | 09:07
di Aldo Peinetti

We arrive in Novi Ligure and it is L'Équipe that dedicates an intense tribute to the myth of Fausto Coppi. It falls to Thomas Perotto (who in the mid-race relay of correspondents has replaced Julien Chesnais) to guide the reader through the legend of the Campionissimo through the figure of Biagio Cavanna: "Does there exist a man with such a list of adjectives, each as mysterious as the other? Does there exist a man with such a presence, capable of inspiring both distrust and fascination at the same time?". An opening followed by a page and a half of newspaper, proof of how much Fausto Coppi can captivate cycling enthusiasts beyond national borders.

As for the Giro, Jhonatan Narvaez draws headlines with football expressions, "hat-trick" on the Corsera and "striker" on Il Giornale, where Pier Augusto Stagi notes: "One could look at the landscape, in fact the general classification riders, from the pink jersey Eulalio to the out-of-class Vingegaard, limit themselves to admiring the natural beauties of Cinque Terre". Rewinding to today's coverage of the Giro on La Gazzetta, here the scene is dominated by Vingegaard's words, someone who despite being a Viking never has a threatening demeanor, having combined leadership and kindness. Jonas says, referring to the Aosta Valley stage on Saturday with 4,350 meters of elevation gain: "in the upcoming mountain stages, starting with this one, we'll have fun". Almost as if he had been joking about Blockhaus and Corno alle Scale.

LA GAZZETTA DELLO SPORT
JONAS RELAUNCHES AND WARNS THE GIRO: "WE'LL HAVE FUN"
THE GIRO IN THREE MOVES
The Giro d'Italia holds its breath before the climbs and Jonas Vingegaard prepares his assault for Saturday's stage in the Aosta Valley, with 4,350 meters of elevation gain. "In the upcoming mountain stages, starting with this one, we'll have fun. The best is yet to come. As you know," recalled the Danish rider from Visma, "I haven't done reconnaissance, but I've studied the course well and on Saturday we could experience one of the five key days of the Giro". It will be the third summit finish: on the first two, Blockhaus and Corno alle Scale, he left his mark. Meanwhile, yesterday in Chiavari, the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narvaez celebrated his third victory, while Afonso Eulalio retained the pink jersey. (Ciro Scognamiglio)

CORRIERE DELLA SERA
NARVAEZ HAT-TRICK, HE LEARNED FROM POGACAR
As happens during mid-seasons, the famous interlocutory stages of the Giro d'Italia are now a memory of better times. Yesterday's Porcari-Chiavari stage would have been perfect for that role: too undulating for sprinters, too easy to modify the general classification and stimulate the big names, but perfect instead for the riders of teams short on victories and placements, those who desperately need points and visibility. Polti with Ivan Basso and Alberto Contador and Bardiani of the Reverberis family who manage with modest budgets but also and especially Picnic, Lotto or the same Alpecin, formations from the Netherlands that must hear those who say they came to the Giro for tourism. (Marco Bonarrigo)

REPUBBLICA
NARVAEZ'S MAGICAL BREAKAWAYS, THE BIG NAMES STAY UNDER COVER
The man of the Giro comes from El Playon de San Francisco, Ecuador, his name is Jhonatan Narvaez, he has won three stages out of 11, equally divided between south (Cosenza), center (Fermo) and north (Chiavari), each time inventing the race: 117 km of breakaway in Basilicata, 76 in the Marches, 90 yesterday in Liguria. Breaking away from the breakaway, in the end, Narvaez beat Spanish climber Enric Mas in a two-man sprint, a climber with a noble past, in clear decline in performance for some years, who came to Italy to collect daily results. (Cosimo Cito)

IL GIORNALE
NARVAEZ, POGACAR'S DOMESTIQUE, BECOMES THE GIRO'S STRIKER
One could look at the landscape, in fact the general classification riders, from the pink jersey Eulalio to the out-of-class Vingegaard, limit themselves to admiring the natural beauties of Cinque Terre. The sun finally shines fully on the race, the sea welcomes them releasing its sparkling glimmers. The riders who need to take advantage of these stages to bring home something are doing extraordinary things, even though it's always the same one who brings home something: Jhonatan Narvaez. He's the attacker of this Giro. The striker of the UAE: even though Tadej Pogacar isn't here, preparing for the Tour and already lost in the first stage Adam Yates, Jay Vine and Marc Soler. The Ecuadorian doesn't miss a beat and scores for the third time in this Giro, his fifth victory in his career on the pink roads. "We must win to maintain the average," says Fabio Baldato, team manager of the Emirati team, in the morning. Said and done. (Pier Augusto Stagi)

L'ÉQUIPE
THE LEGEND OF COPPI'S BLIND MASSEUR
Does there exist a man with such a list of adjectives, each as mysterious as the other? Does there exist a man with such a presence, capable of inspiring both distrust and fascination at the same time? Born on July 3, 1893 and died on December 21, 1961 at the age of 68, Biagio Cavanna, born Giuseppe, later becoming Biagio, became known as the "Wizard of Novi Ligure", the small Piedmont village where the Giro d'Italia group arrives today. A wizard, with dark glasses and white cane, who accompanied the rise of the "Campionissimo", Fausto Coppi, in the last century. The words associated with him tell of a myth that transcended time. He is the discoverer, the guide, the confidant, then masseur, trainer, mentor, tactician, as well as healer, healer, philosopher, poet... (Thomas Perotto)

TUTTOSPORT
NARVAEZ AND COMPANY; LIKE THIS? FEW AND RUTHLESS
Cold and ruthless like a concentrate of Beppe Saronni and Moreno Argentin. General classification aside, Jhonatan Narvaez, 29 years old, is the best actor of the Giro d'Italia. In stages that require explosiveness and timing, Narvaez is a chess player who doesn't make a wrong move. Yesterday the Ecuadorian National Champion triumphed in the Porcari-Chiavari stage and signed his 3rd victory in this edition of the Giro. He beat Enric Mas in the sprint and 3rd, at 11", Diego Ulissi. In Chiavari the noble part of the general classification didn't change: Afonso Eulalio is still in the pink jersey with 27" over Vingegaard. (Alessandro Brambilla)

CORRIERE DELLO SPORT
NARVAEZ HAT-TRICK, BALLERINI KNOCKED OUT
Cosenza, Fermo and now Chiavari. Jhonatan Narvaez scores the hat-trick at the Giro d'Italia, a guarantee for the UAE Team Emirates-XRG left with just five riders and without captains, but already at the fourth victory in this edition thanks to the hat-trick of the Ecuadorian champion and Igor Arrieta's success in Potenza. Fifth seal in his career in the Corsa Rosa for the twenty-nine-year-old from El Playon de San Francisco, quick as a lizard in these nervous stages, both in launching himself to catch back.
