Lennert Van Eetvelt's Giro d'Italia 2026 comes to an end after eleven stages. The twenty-four-year-old Belgian from Lotto-Intermarchè was forced to abandon the Corsa Rosa after medical examinations following the crash he suffered on the descent of Colle di Guaitarola, along with Christian Scaroni and Filippo Zana, revealed a fracture of a finger on his left hand.
"Lennert Van Eetvelt crashed badly on the descent during the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia. In addition to suffering abrasions to his elbow and forearm, he also fractured the middle finger of his left hand in the fall" the team from the native of Binkom announced through their social media channels.
"Starting tomorrow for the twelfth stage has unfortunately become impossible. For Lenny and for the team, this is a significant setback".
For Van Eetvelt, seventh in the Cosenza stage and prominent alongside Vingegaard and Pellizzari towards Veliko Tarnovo, his first Giro d'Italia ends with the same bitter outcome as the last two major stage races he participated in (the 2025 Tour de France and the 2024 Vuelta España), namely a withdrawal.
His abandonment, combined with the four recorded at the end of yesterday's stage (those of Davide Ballerini, Edward Planckaert, Martin Tjøtta and an ill Erlend Blikra who finished outside the time limit by one and a half minutes), means that in the race, with ten stages remaining until the conclusion, 162 riders remain.
