A thrilling and far from predictable finale at the Eschborn Frankfurt where the German champion emerged victorious. Georg Zimmermann prevailed in a sprint in a small group of twelve riders formed on the final climb of the day. The group attempted until the very last moment to complete the chase but was ultimately caught out right at the finish line. Second place went to Tom Pidcock, third to Ben Tulett. Fifth place for Simone Gualdi who did outstanding work for his teammate.
THE RACE. The Eschborn Frankfurt has become a tradition on May Day, the German classic celebrated its sixty-third edition with a route of 211.4 km that was even tougher in the central section. From Eschborn to Frankfurt it was a continuous series of climbs and descents with triple passages over the Mammolshan climb, but the final 30 kilometers were practically flat.
Much of the race was characterized by an attack from 5 riders: Jonas Rutsch (Lotto Intermarche), Aivaras Mikutis (Tudor Pro Cycling), Thomas Gachignard and Samuel Leroux (TotalEnergies) and Matyas Kopecky (Unibet Rose Rockets). The breakaway riders managed to gain over 6 minutes of advantage, but the peloton with a sharp acceleration made an incredible recovery in the central part of the race. With 86 km remaining to the finish Jamie Meehan (Team Cofidis) was the first to make a decisive move and together with Tim Wellens (Team UAE Emirates XRG) and Emiel Vertynge (Alpecin Premier Tech) managed to rejoin the race leaders.
Among the attackers, Tim Wellens proved to be the most active, even attempting a solo move that ended approximately 35 km from the finish on the final climb of the day. It was precisely on the last passage over the Mammolshan that a small group of 12 riders formed, composed of Natnael Tesfation (Team Movistar), Felix Engelhardt (Jayco Alula), Adria Pericas (UAE Team Emirates XRG), Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Alex Baudin and Michael Valgren (EF Education EasyPost), Ben Tulett (Team Visma Lease a Bike), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Georg Zimmermann and Simone Gualdi (Lotto Intermarché), Ion Izagirre (Team Cofidis) and Florian Stork (Team Tudor).
The group organized the chase only when a few kilometers remained and attempted to make the catch right in the final meters. Meanwhile, however, the sprint among the breakaway riders had already begun, and they fought for victory among themselves.
