The East Flanders Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation following what happened on Sunday in Wichelen, during the Tour of Flanders. According to the Prosecutor, 54 cyclists continued racing after the traffic light turned red at the level crossing.
«Ignoring a red light at a level crossing is a fourth-degree offense, the most serious category under traffic law, which can have serious consequences. This violation carries serious safety risks for both cyclists and third parties. Therefore, these infractions are punished severely» the statement reads.
When the peloton arrived at full speed at the level crossing with the red light, one-third of the group, including Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel, passed through without stopping. Only when the barriers came down did the rest of the group, including Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel, dismount. The first group was not excluded from the race, but had to wait for the second group to catch up before resuming hostilities.
«All those responsible have been identified and an official report is being drawn up. Such violations are unacceptable, even in a sporting context». It has not yet been decided whether the cyclists will have to appear before the court.
