Stress and agitation characterized the final phase of the third stage of the Volta a Catalunya for Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian crashed heavily on the ground at a roundabout in the final kilometre of the race, seeing all his chances of victory disappear.
Evenepoel was in considerable pain after the crash, but still managed to reach the finish line in Villa-Seca. "As you can see I'm still on my feet, so that's good news. I wanted to get my hands on the handlebars for the sprint and right at that moment there was a rather large pothole. I hit it head-on because I didn't see it, and it wasn't even clearly marked on the road, there were no signs or anything, so I didn't see it and lost control of the bike".
At that moment Evenepoel was together with Vingegaard, who eventually crossed the finish line in fifteenth place, as he didn't want to take advantage of his opponent who had crashed. The Belgian didn't want to comment much on this, simply saying that every rider has their own strategy.
"We already knew from this morning that there would be crosswind and once we came back we would create echelons, from that point on I think the team did perfect work. I think the way we tackled the descent, when we entered the main road and then accelerated, was fantastic".
In the general classification Godon, also winner of the third stage, maintains the leader's jersey with an advantage of 11" over Evenepoel, 16" over Pidcock and 18" over Vingegaard. "If there hadn't been the crash of course I would have raced for the victory, but fate decided otherwise". The Belgian appeared worn out, but is also confident for the start of the fourth stage. "For now I'm quite sore and we need to see later and tomorrow morning if there's anything more serious. But as I said, I'm still on my feet, I haven't broken anything, so that's positive".
