There is no doubt that the rise and victorious exploits of Isaac Del Toro have skyrocketed interest in cycling in Mexican territory. Last year, thanks above all to the achievements (as many as 18) of the twenty-two-year-old from Ensenada, the Central American nation was able to celebrate as many as 26 victories (of which 19 in races of category .1 or higher), ranking among the 15 most winning countries of the season and, most importantly, bringing the passion of its people for cycling to another level.
In the wake of this unrepeatable season (the most prolific ever) and the new successes already achieved by its most representative figure in this 2026, Mexico has now reportedly gotten seriously to work to revive what, until about a decade ago, was its flagship race in terms of road cycling: the Vuelta a Mexico.
According to what was revealed by Escape Collective, the stage race (last held in 2015 and previously won by Laurent Fignon and Oscar Sevilla) is expected to return to the calendar next season, scheduled for the very beginning of 2027, a project that has been directly entrusted to the Union Ciclista de Mexico, the new entity responsible for coordinating all cycling activity in the country following the suspension of the national federation.
Through the diligence and effort of this newly established organization, the Vuelta a Mexico could thus seriously rise from the ashes and, given that the ambition would be to see the race granted important status by the UCI, immediately reclaim in grand style a place in professional cycling. If everything were to proceed without complications or delays, it would be much easier for the organizers to attract Del Toro himself and UAE Team Emirates-XRG to the start, concretely realizing what is, it is easy to understand, a true dream for all enthusiasts and the Mexican cycling movement.
Certainly, with the presence of their beloved champion and what has been in recent years the best team in the world in Mexico, the enthusiasm surrounding the race would reach heights that are difficult to imagine, with the result that even more young people and, in general, increasingly more people could be captivated by the magic of cycling in that part of the continent.
