TROFEO BINDA. THE STARS OF WORLD WOMEN'S CYCLING BATTLE IT OUT IN CITTIGLIO

WOMEN | 15/03/2026 | 08:25

Just hours before the Trofeo Alfredo Binda – Comune di Cittiglio, one of the most prestigious classics in international women's cycling, there is an image that tells the story of tomorrow's race, Sunday, March 15th.

On one side Cat Ferguson, nineteen years old, one of the brightest talents of the new generation. On the other Marianne Vos, a legend of world cycling and the race record holder with four victories.

There are almost twenty years between them. In between is the entire peloton and, ultimately, all of contemporary women's cycling: established champions, athletes in their prime competitive years, and young riders seeking their first major international success. This is also the charm of the Trofeo Binda, a race that over the years has often seen different generations meet and clash.

The presence of Marianne Vos remains one of the great reference points of the race. The Dutch cyclist is the most successful rider in the history of the Trofeo Alfredo Binda with four victories and, despite the passing years, continues to be one of the most feared athletes in the peloton. Experience, tactical intelligence, and an extraordinary ability to read the race make Vos one of the most anticipated protagonists for this edition as well.

Great attention also for Elisa Longo Borghini, current Italian champion and one of the most representative athletes of international cycling. The Piedmontese rider knows the roads of Valcuvia well and has already written her name in the race's honor roll with victories achieved in 2013 and 2021. Her presence adds further prestige to the race and makes her one of the most anticipated protagonists for the Italian public.

Among the most interesting stories on the eve of the race is that of Canadian Magdeleine Vallieres, who will take the start wearing the world champion's jersey. The roads of the Trofeo Binda are not new to her: in past years she has often raced in Cittiglio in support of her team leaders. This time, however, the scenario changes. With the rainbow jersey on her shoulders, Magdeleine Vallieres arrives on the roads of Valcuvia with a different role and with the spotlight on her.

Among the protagonists of recent years, Elisa Balsamo is notably absent, having won three victories at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and becoming one of the most successful athletes in the race's recent history. Her absence makes the forecast even more open in a race that often decides itself on the slopes of the Orino climb or on the final circuit around Cittiglio.

Today on the roads between Luino and Cittiglio, therefore, very different stories will come together: the legend of Vos, the solidity of Italian champion Longo Borghini, the curiosity surrounding the rainbow jersey of Magdeleine Vallieres, and the energy of the new generation represented by Ferguson.
Between the youngest and the most experienced there are almost twenty years of difference. In between is the entire peloton.

But the Trofeo Binda is not just a clash between the champions of the Women's WorldTour. The story of the day will actually begin in the morning with the Piccolo Trofeo Alfredo Binda – Valli del Verbano, a UCI Nations' Cup Junior Women event, which will bring some of the most promising young cyclists in the international scene to the same roads.

It is here that the future of women's cycling often becomes visible. Many athletes who have gone on to win among the elite in subsequent years have passed through this race. And perhaps this is also the deeper meaning of tomorrow's day: in the morning the girls chasing their first major international result, in the afternoon the champions who have already written important pages in the history of this sport. Between Luino and Cittiglio, ultimately, women's cycling tells its entire story in a single day.
