Lido di Camaiore is increasingly becoming the domain of Filippo Ganna. With today's victory ahead of his teammate Thymen Arensman and Max Wascheid, the Italian time trial champion has now triumphed for the fourth time in five years in the opening time trial held along the wide avenues of this Versilia resort, which once again inspired him to not only improve his 2025 time by 9 seconds but also to set the fastest time trial in the entire history of Tirreno-Adriatico.
All of this, as the INEOS Grenadiers rider himself emphasized, came after following a different approach to the Race of the Two Seas, specifically designed to have him arrive fresher for the prestigious races he will compete in during the months of March and April.
"I'm really happy. I didn't want to push too hard this winter with the appointments coming in a few weeks, but the condition is good and my legs are turning well, even though it wasn't my best performance in the saddle" Ganna revealed after completing a time trial that, with his first place, Arensman's second, and Sheffield's fourth, saw his team clearly in excellent form.
"As a team we showed we are really strong: Sheffield and Arensman delivered an extraordinary performance and now they're in a good position" emphasized the twenty-nine-year-old from Piedmont. "Thymen as the general classification rider? He certainly showed he's going very strong, we came here with ambitions and so we'll try to do our best".
Speaking of the blue jersey, Ganna will meanwhile try to defend it in the coming days before possibly ceding the symbol of leadership to his teammates or whoever, a mission in which he will compete with a clear idea in mind.
"Last year it would have been nice to hold the jersey for six stages instead of five, this year we'll see what I can do but always keeping in mind that, as I said, I don't want to overdo it and risk arriving tired at Milan-Sanremo" reiterated the two-time world time trial champion.
"We'll see where my legs take me and then we'll accept accordingly what we manage to achieve. Let's just hope we have the same favorable weather conditions in the coming days. For now, let's enjoy the result and think about celebrating" concluded a visibly satisfied Ganna for having managed to confirm himself in a time trial that, perhaps more than any other, he clearly feels is his own.
