With 55 victories on the road to his credit (the last two conquered a few weeks ago at the GP Visit South Aegean and the Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise), a world title and two European titles (both on the track) in his trophy cabinet and an Olympic silver medal (the one in the Omnium achieved in 2012) around his neck, Bryan Coquard has decided, for the final years of his career, to focus on the only laurel missing from his more than respectable palmares: the five-ring title.
To succeed in this endeavor, the thirty-three-year-old from Saint-Nazaire has chosen to return to his first love, the track, which in addition to being the discipline where, in the past, he came closest to Olympic gold is also the one where he laid the foundations for a professional career of absolute significance.
Coquard therefore, as he himself announced to the microphones of Bistrot Velo (Eurosport France podcast), will soon proceed to dust off his skills in the velodromes with the clear intention of aiming at the big target at Los Angeles 2028, Olympics to which he will present himself at 36 years old.
"I am preparing my return to the velodromes. My goal is to become Olympic champion before my career ends with Benjamin Thomas in Los Angeles" declared the French class of '92 who, in choosing the partner who will accompany him in his ambitious journey, played it safe by opting for one of the most titled and highly regarded track cyclists in circulation.
"I have great confidence in him, we have known each other for years and on the track there is a certain chemistry between us. If all goes well, we will be a couple with all the credentials to play a leading role in Los Angeles" said Coquard, determined to create a cohesive and well-coordinated duo made up of two elements capable of handling themselves well in a specialty like the Madison.
"The American race is a race I love, I think it is the most beautiful one you can do on the track" said the French sprinter regarding a race that saw him reach the top of the world in 2015 alongside Morgan Kneisky, also the partner of Thomas's world success, achieved in the same event two years later.
In the Cofidis camp therefore, there will be two, in the coming three years, to combine track activity with road activity, a possibility that, within Raphael Jeune's team, has been given to both Thomas and Coquard by virtue of the various alternatives (Aniołkowski and Fretin above all) present in the roster for sprint finishes.
"In the team I have less responsibility for the sprints than before and this gives me the freedom to try my hand at the track for the Olympics. The team agrees and so we are all going in the same direction" clarified Coquard who, having framed the objective, will immediately get to work.
"I will return to racing in the velodromes already this year. I would like to participate in the World Championships at the end of the season in Shanghai" concluded the experienced French rider, indicating the first major track objective to reach in top condition in this 2026.
