The Opening Weekend we have just left behind was undoubtedly a frantic, spectacular and event-filled one. At both the Omloop Nieuwsblad and the Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne, there were indeed plenty of thrilling moments, unexpected incidents and, as is customary in races in the North, many crashes and accidents that, in succession, ended up disrupting the regular course of both races, leaving several of their protagonists quite battered.
Among the tumbles that caused the most serious damage is certainly the one that befell Irish national champion Rory Townsend, who, like other colleagues, finished Sunday's Kuurne with a premature withdrawal and a trip to the hospital.
There, after the necessary examinations, the winner of the 2025 Cyclassics Hamburg (now with the Unibet Rose Rockets from this year) unfortunately had a nasty tibia fracture diagnosed, a diagnosis that will certainly prevent him from best supporting Dylan Groenewegen and Lukas Kubis in the Northern races in the coming weeks.
"Yesterday at the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne my race ended after about 60 km when I went over the handlebars and landed directly on my knee. Unfortunately, the tests revealed a tibia fracture" revealed the former Q36.5 rider on his social media channels.
"It's not the update I wanted to share. I'll be out of action for a while and that's quite frustrating, but the goal is to recover and come back stronger" Townsend clarified before thanking those who stood by him in these difficult recent hours and mentally preparing himself for the rehabilitation that awaits him in the coming months.
