Jonas Vingegaard was the victim of a fall during training yesterday, fortunately without serious consequences. In a brief post on social media, Visma Lease a Bike writes: "Jonas Vingegaard fell during Monday's training. Fortunately, he is fine and has not suffered serious injuries. In general, as a team, we would like to urge cyclists to always put safety first. For your well-being and that of others, we ask you to allow cyclists to train and give them as much space and tranquility as possible".
According to data recorded on Strava and testimonies from some cyclists, Vingegaard fell while descending, sustaining some injuries and abrasions: the Dane would have been bothered by cyclists trying to follow him during training, and this is what the team refers to in its post, as reported by Sporza.
The fall occurred during the descent of Fuente la Reina, near Malaga, and the first to describe it was the Spanish cycling enthusiast Pedro García Fernández, who even posted a selfie taken while riding behind Vingegaard and wrote: "Jonas fell after trying to drop me from his wheel during the Fuente la Reina descent. I stopped to ask how he was, but he was angry because I was trying to follow him. He decided to accelerate downhill to leave me behind, but then he fell".
Several eyewitnesses confirm García Fernández's account: "I saw Jonas standing near the guardrail with a bloody face. He must have fallen badly". And another eyewitness adds: "I stopped and asked if he needed help, but he, angry, told me to go away. I believe professional cyclists must be given space, and it's important that they are respected. He probably felt under pressure and descended faster than he should have".
