"Incompatible" and "lacking coherence" were the words with which, in June, the UCI had rejected the One Cycling project. Promoted by a group of top-tier teams and privately supported by some Arab funds, the plan, as it is right to remember, aimed to create a private league (therefore external to the traditional International Cycling Union circuit) that, through a dedicated calendar with events scattered around the world, could bring the strongest riders to compete against each other and, at the same time, increase the economic income of the teams.
Well, a few months later, the idea of reforming the world of road cycling through a similar solution is again gaining traction among team owners who, as revealed by Escape Collective, led by Ivan Glasenberg (Pinarello-Q36.5) and Zdeněk Bakala (Soudal Quick-Step), are preliminarily discussing its actual feasibility.
Partial confirmation of this rumor came in recent hours from the words of Eusebio Unzue who, interviewed by Nacho Labarga (Marca) on the occasion of the presentation of the new season of the Movistar series 'El dia menos pensado', when directly asked, did not hide that the teams have begun to reflect on what to do.
"There are no updates yet. It is something we are working on and I believe it is a step we must take, continuing to evolve to remain an attractive sport," declared the general manager of the Spanish team, not refraining from emphasizing the need to move in a different direction from the current cycling path.
Unzue, by expressing this clear point of view, aligns himself with the positions of Richard Plugge (one of the most convinced supporters of One Cycling) who, just four days ago, had underlined the need for modern cycling and its protagonists to orient themselves towards other, more remunerative options.
"I think that, whether we like it or not, cycling is in a negative spiral and I believe that is why the urgency becomes greater for everyone every day," the Visma Lease a Bike team leader had said during his team's media day. "Many relatively large teams are running into trouble and even organizers are encountering more and more difficulties, so we must ensure that cycling undergoes a major change."
This is an need that, in one way or another, at the beginning of 2026 is finding agreement and bringing together more and more cycling world insiders.
