At just 27 years old, Michel Ries' adventure in the world of cycling comes to an end. Left without a team after the closure of Arkea-B&B Hotels (the team he had ridden for in the last four seasons), the Luxembourg-born rider born in '98 has decided to hang up his bike, ending his professional career after only six years.
"After many years in the saddle, it's time to say goodbye to professional cycling" announced the winner of the third stage of the 2019 Giro della Valle d'Aosta on his social channels.
"From my first races with UC Dippach to the step-by-step growth with the Kometa Cycling Team, to the realization of my childhood dream of racing in the WorldTour thanks to Trek and Arkéa, this journey went far beyond what I could have ever imagined when I started. I had the privilege of participating in Grand Tours, racing some of the most important Monument classics, and representing my country at the Tokyo Olympics. These are moments I will never forget" Ries continued.
"Cycling has given me lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, but also many difficult moments. There were sacrifices, injuries, doubts, pain, and complicated days, but I always gave my all. I leave this sport without regrets, only with gratitude and many memories" stated the three-time Luxembourg time trial vice-champion.
"I could not have done all this alone. Thanks to FSCL, COSL, LIHPS, Gary and Altus Sports, and all those who believed in me and supported me along the way. A special thanks also to my family and friends for their support and unconditional trust. Thanks also to all my teammates for the moments we shared on the road. As one chapter closes for me now, another new, exciting one begins, full of new opportunities. Thanks to everyone who was part of this journey".
Raised in the youth system of Polartec-Kometa before making the leap to the big leagues in 2019 with Trek-Segafredo, Ries leaves cycling without having obtained any professional victories, becoming the fifth rider from Arkea to opt for retirement after Arnaud Demare, Anthony Delaplace, Elie Gesbert, and Miles Scotson.
With this decision, only one rider from those who last year defended the colors of the French team has not yet formally resolved their future: Giosuè Epis, who however, after recently getting married to his Giulia, should soon officially announce his move to Petrolike, Marco Bellini's Continental Mexican team capable of closing 2025 with 9 victories.
