Remco Evenepoel, through an interview with Sporza, wanted to wish his fans a Merry Christmas, hinting that next year he will try to win the Tour de France. Indeed, in his Christmas interview, the Belgian candidly declared his desire to become the absolute best.
"I want to be better than Tadej Pogacar: that's why I came to Red Bull. To try to beat and surpass Tadej Pogacar". Winning is never easy, and doing so when you have to compete with a champion like Pogacar becomes a truly titanic task. But Evenepoel not only has to deal with his desire to win, but also must contend with an important team and Florian Lipowitz, his teammate who in the last Grande Boucle achieved the final third place and the young rider's jersey.
"If everything continues to go well and I manage to have an excellent winter, with the support, guidance, and teammates I have here, along with scientific knowledge, I think there's a lot of room for improvement and success."
The Belgian changed teams, convinced that at Soudal-Quick Step he would not have been able to make further progress, and now, in his Red Bull-Bora hansgrohe, he wants to aim for the best possible result, with the goal of surpassing the Slovenian champion. "I want to be better than him - Evenepoel said referring to Pogacar - It's very difficult, we all know that. But I want to make progress and surpass Tadej. It will take a lot of strength and work, but I am incredibly motivated. I hope to exceed my limits this year."
Evenepoel knows what he needs to work on, and first and foremost is his VO2max training: this should allow him to keep pace with Pogacar for longer. According to Remco, coexisting with Lipowitz will not be a problem, but an advantage for both. "If we follow a plan, we must only think about the advantages. Florian and I are both very ambitious, but we are two very different riders. I am more explosive, while he is like a diesel engine. We are opposite poles, and together we can only work well. We must complement each other, not conflict, and if we manage to do this, then we will both achieve important results."
Remco withdrew from the last Tour de France, and this was an important wake-up call for him, a limit he had not been able to overcome. That decision had led him to conduct a deep analysis, which had already begun in the spring, which had not gone as he had hoped. Certainly, there were still the aftermath of his fall last December, but for Remco Evenepoel, there was also a problem of limits that needed to be overcome and that in the Belgian team would not have found the right solution.
"I am aware of my choices and also of the difficulties, and I think that by working hard as I have always done, but with a team that can offer me so much in terms of growth, I am convinced that the results will be seen already in the new season."
