The slopes of Monte Calvo thinned out the leading group, and at the mountain grand prix, Cagnazzo, Ton, and shortly behind Amialiusik crossed the summit. The subsequent descent brought the caravan to the gates of Bologna, where the group completed the chase of the BePink - Imatra - Bongioanni and Liv AlUla Jayco athletes, forcing them back into the ranks.
The immediate first climb to Colle della Guardia saw about fifteen athletes gain an advantage, including world champion Vallieres, Le Court, Molman, and Fisher-Black. This was followed by the sound of the bell, a quick descent, and a new climb to San Luca, concluded with the victory of the Mauritian champion.
