Lorenzo Mark Finn is not a man of many words, but he accepts to share his world championship emotions: "The initial plan was to see what Belgium would do: the first half of the race was very controlled, and when we pushed on the pavé, selection was immediate. We were first six, then four, and then two with the Swiss Huber. In the last lap, I managed to attack and stay alone, giving myself another incredible joy, just like last year".
Can you explain the triumph gesture?
"The finale was incredible, my ears were hurting from the great enthusiasm I felt on the final straight. First, I wanted to emphasize that this is my second consecutive world championship, and then I celebrated with the arrow-to-the-target gesture: I had talked about it yesterday with Borgo, we promised each other that if one of us won, we would celebrate the success with this gesture. A dedication? Victory for Fabiana, my girlfriend. Thanks to the entire team and staff".
A look already towards the future.
"Next year I'll remain Under 23 with Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe Rookies, I can't wait to tackle the Next Gen Giro and Avenir with this jersey".
TEAMMATES. Around him celebrating, his three teammates. Alessandro Borgo: "It was a goal for all of us, Lorenzo left the world jersey for a few hours and was absolutely great".
Simone Gualdi: "An enormous emotion, we made Belgium race and in the end we took control of the race, then Lorenzo, who is truly great, took care of the rest".
Pietro Mattio: "There will be a big celebration tonight, a world championship must be celebrated properly: seeing Lorenzo cross the finish line with arms raised was truly fantastic".
PRESS CONFERENCE. Lorenzo Finn seems to be an already experienced champion, that gold medal and world jersey seem natural for him. Born in Genoa in 2006, Finn won the world title leaving his rivals behind and arriving at the Kigali finish line with a 31" advantage over Swiss Huber and over a minute ahead of Austrian Schretil.
"Any medal at the World Championships is truly incredible. And achieving it for your national team is really special. Gold is simply the pinnacle of great work and is truly something fantastic".
The blue jersey will turn 19 next December 19th, today he was the youngest in the race and this is the second gold he has won at the Worlds, after the one conquered in the junior category. He stood out immediately and, after a first year as a junior with CSP, he entered the Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe orbit: first with Team Grenke Auto Eder, then with the Rookies team with which he will continue to race next year.
"I'm really happy with the team choice. I've been with Red Bull since I was a junior and they have a long-term vision for me and every rider on the team. This result is simply hard work being repaid when everyone acts as a team and leaves nothing behind. I would like to thank the team because, while today I raced with the national team, the months leading up to this saw hard work from everyone. Sometimes I hate my coach John Wakefield, but he's a good person and has brought me to an excellent level".
Finn had a positive year, in which he tried to continue growing: sixth at the Next Gen Giro and fourth at Avenir, after breaking a collarbone on the eve of the national championships, he prepared perfectly for the world championship.
"I arrived here in Rwanda very confident, the form was good after the Tour de l'Avenir. The sensation in the time trial wasn't exceptional, but I think it was due to altitude and heat, but after a week here today everything seemed better, the course was super tough and I felt really good".
As always, mom and dad were cheering for him, with a very discreet presence.
"I think they have never missed a race I participated in. Wherever I race, they follow me. I think it's really special to have them here. I want to thank them, obviously, for what they have done for me. So, thanks to them for being here and I think they will also enjoy this moment".
The Ligurian is at his second world title, albeit in different categories (he is the first Italian to achieve the consecutive junior-under double, the second rider in history to do so after Matej Mohoric) and the emotion is always great.
"No, it wasn't the same thing, I think last year was a bit more shocking for me, also because then I was truly incredulous. This year I knew I could win, I felt I had good legs and was a bit more confident. But there are so many variables in a race and there are always strong riders racing against you, so it's never easy to give substance to a goal. Regarding upcoming races, I'll be at the Europeans in a week and then some races with Red Bull to conclude the season and finally for me too there will be some rest".
