A moment of deep emotion and shared memory awaits cycling enthusiasts and friends of the Ghisallo Museum: Tuesday, September 30th, at 5:00 PM, a small ceremony will be held at the Cycling Museum Madonna del Ghisallo to honor Vito Di Tano, an unforgettable cyclocross champion who passed away last February.
The initiative aims to pay tribute not only to the athlete but also to the man who left an indelible mark in the hearts of those who knew him, a rider of great talent and determination, protagonist of one of the most beautiful pages in Italian cyclocross history. During the ceremony, Vito Di Tano's children and the Guerciotti family, long associated with the sporting career of the Apulian champion, will officially donate to the Ghisallo Museum two items of extraordinary symbolic and sporting value: the bicycle with which Di Tano won the World Cyclocross Championship in 1986 in Lembeek, Belgium, and the world champion jersey that crowned him world champion. Two objects that tell a story of sacrifice, passion, and triumph, which from today will become part of the museum's permanent collection, helping to preserve the memory of a champion who wrote the history of off-road cycling.
The ceremony will be open to the public and will see the participation of family members, friends, representatives from the cycling world, and enthusiasts, in a sober but meaningful context. It will be an opportunity to remember Vito Di Tano not only for his sporting achievements but also for the values he embodied: commitment, loyalty, and respect for sport.
Born in 1952, originally from Monopoli (BA), Di Tano was the protagonist of an intense career filled with successes. After a solid road cycling experience, he established himself as one of the great cyclocross specialists, winning two world championships and six national titles, competing in Paolo Guerciotti's team - currently named Fas Airport Services Guerciotti Premac - from January 1978 to February 1990.
Fundamental in his journey was his partnership with the Guerciotti family, protagonists of an entrepreneurial and sporting story that has accompanied generations of athletes in the world of cyclocross. Founded by Paolo and Italo Guerciotti in 1964 in Milan, Guerciotti is today an international reference brand in high-end bicycle production. Beyond production, the family played a crucial role in developing cyclocross in Italy, creating the historic GS Guerciotti team, which launched and supported champions like Vito Di Tano. Their commitment to cycling has always been fueled by a deep passion, which is still reflected in their sporting and business activities today.
"Vito was first my rider, then our DS. But above all, he was always my best friend - says Paolo Guerciotti - A bond I never created with any other rider. The friendship that united us was fraternal and went beyond cycling. He was not just a champion on the bike, but a great man, rich in values. Vito's loss has left a great void in my heart, in that of my family, and in the entire cycling world. I'm only sorry that he couldn't enjoy the victory of our last World Title won with Mattia Agostinacchio, a historic goal that could have represented the seal of his career as a DS in the last year he would have wanted to do."
"The Ghisallo Museum, guardian of Italian cycling memory and culture, welcomes this donation with gratitude, enriching an increasingly important section dedicated to cyclocross, aware of the historical and human value it represents," says Fondazione Museo del Ghisallo president Antonio Molteni. "The inclusion of Vito Di Tano's world championship bicycle and jersey in the museum collection is not just a symbolic gesture: it is an act of love towards cycling, which will allow future generations to know and appreciate the figure of a great champion."
