There's an invasion of G's on the roads of the Tour of Britain. For the final act of Geraint Thomas's career, spectators and colleagues have donned masks depicting the Welsh champion's face and drawn a sea of G's on the asphalt.
Thousands of cycling enthusiasts have gathered to celebrate the 2018 Tour de France winner and Olympic gold medalist on the track at Beijing in 2008 and London 2012, who will retire at the end of today's stage, a 122.2 km route starting from the Newport velodrome, passing through Maindy Flyers, the cycling club where he grew up, and finishing in his hometown of Cardiff.
"These masks are very realistic, so they're a bit strange but fun. Yesterday was crazy with so many people around. Today will be a day I'll remember forever. We'll pass 100 meters from my parents' house and in front of the pub where I had my first pint. Crossing the finish line among friends and family will be emotional. I'll probably shed a few tears seeing Sarah and Macsen (his wife and son, ed.), but I'll definitely keep my sunglasses on," Mr. G commented emotionally before the start of his last dance.
His team, Ineos Grenadiers, will wear a special jersey designed by the Welshman that celebrates the names of the people, places and victories that have marked his career, as well as a hand-drawn design by his son.
