Called the "Excellence Race", because it crosses renowned places and areas of the Treviso province. The event takes place on Saturday, August 23rd. The route passes through villas of noble families from the past, goes to "visit" the famous art master Antonio Canova who created world-renowned plaster works. It passes through the Piave, a river sacred to the Homeland, before entering the UNESCO zone with the prestigious Prosecco Docg hills. It's a new addition to the Treviso Province calendar that also counts for the provincial under 23 and elite championship.
The race - wanted by former Morgano mayor Daniele Rostirolla, who made contact with organizer Adriano Zambon during the arrival of the 2024 Giro del Veneto stage - starts from Badoere di Morgano, from the roundabout, famous for the Rotonda Prize that our director Pier Augusto Stagi also received in 2022. It crosses into the Padua province through Levada, Silvelle (a location made famous for cyclocross by Armando Zamprogna where international events were held and several national championships were organized), Piombino Dese, where Villa Cornaro is located. Then it returns to the Treviso area, crossing Resana, Cavasagra executed by Francesco Maria Preti around 1770 for Pietro Corner, Fossalunga, Vedelago, Fanzolo where Villa Emo, created by Andrea Palladio, is located.
After 43 kilometers, there's a 750-meter dirt road section in the Caravaggio area where the Madonna dei Miracoli Sanctuary is passed. The race goes through Posmon, crosses Montebelluna, homeland of Sportsystem. It takes the gentle slope of Mercato Vecchio, a third-category mountain grand prix. After finishing the ramp, it goes through Caerano San Marco, Cornuda, Maser (home to two footwear manufacturers Sidi and Gaerne and Villa Barbaro built by Andrea Palladio) and takes the Mostacin climb, three and a half kilometers with the last stretch particularly steep towards the sky: it's a first-category mountain grand prix. This is likely where the race will be decided. Then it takes the winding descent of La Valle, Casonetto, Castelcucco, Possagno temple climb, in the opposite direction to the Giro d'Italia route in the Fiume Veneto-Asiago stage.
It passes through the center of Possagno, where Antonio Canova's gypsotheque is located, Cavaso del Tomba, Pederobba, where the French military memorial is, Curogna, Onigo, Cornuda and Covolo. It crosses the Piave at Vidor Bridge and enters the Conegliano and Valdobbiadene Prosecco Hills UNESCO World Heritage landscape, where winemakers' work has contributed to creating a unique scenario with Prosecco Docg vineyards. Passing through Bigolino, it reaches Valdobbiadene at kilometer 106: the Giro d'Italia arrived three times: 2009 with Alessandro Petacchi's victory; 2015 individual time trial stage starting from Treviso, won by Vasil' Kiryienka; in 2020 with the individual time trial won by Filippo Ganna.
In the finale, riders will have to complete a 25-kilometer circuit twice. They'll pass through Valdobbiadene under the finish line and continue to San Pietro di Barbozza, Santo Stefano and tackle Combai from the Guia side where the first mountain grand prix is located.
They'll head towards the finish line from the Cyclist's Fountain, taking via Canal (which is climbed multiple times in the Piva Trophy), Col San Martino, Colbertaldo, San Giovanni, Bigolino, Valdobbiadene where at the end of the second lap the finish line awaits after 156 kilometers.
"The event is of national level" - says Treviso provincial president Giorgio Dal Bò - "to give everyone the opportunity to participate, the Treviso Provincial Committee offers the chance to form a mixed team (minimum four athletes) composed of riders from societies not already registered for the race. We want to give space to all athletes who want to challenge themselves, and we hope to see some off-road sector young riders in action. The Treviso committee wants to highlight societies organizing events for the first time. Like the Trittico Rosa della Marca Trevigiana that assigns titles to young women's categories next week in Mosnigo di Moriago della Battaglia. A heartfelt thanks to Adriano Zambon (who will also organize the Giro del Veneto from September 12th to 14th, ed.) for his commitment in organizing the event".
The race will see participation from all the best amateur and Continental Teams in Italy and two foreign teams: Beltrami, Team Technipes #inEmiliaRomagna, Team Gragnano, Uc Trevigiani Energiapura Marchiol and Sc Padovani Polo Cherry Bank, General Store, Sissio Team and so on.
There are many amateur races no longer organized in the homeland of cycling. First of all, the Gianfranco Bianchin Trophy, which in 1979 awarded the amateur Italian title to Giuseppe Petito and saw Tadej Pogačar win in 2018. Moreover, champions like Martinelli, Favero, Moro, Claudio Argentin, Moroni, Condolo, Luigi and Giorgio Furlan, Finco, Guerini, Bertolini, Checchin, Figueras, Giordani, Caruso, Visconti, Sbaragli and Mozzato have triumphed before turning professional. Subsequently, two races in the city of Treviso also came to an end: the Fregonese and Bevilacqua Memorials. There was also farewell to the Città di Conegliano (which two years ago hosted the Giro del Veneto finale), which took place in Scomigo in Teofilo Sanson's town, the Montebelluna-Pianezze, won in 1976 by Mario Beccia, and the circuits of Paderno, Mareno and Pianzano that preceded the Popolarissima di Treviso. Then the race in Caerano San Marco in honor of Danilo Furlan, sponsor of Mg Boys, Roncadelle, Bibano, Negrisia and Pralongo di Monastier. The races in Castelcucco (youngest), Arcade (women) and Cimetta di Codognè (juniors) have been converted.
