Quattrone is a young man being forged in mountain biking. Immersed in the predominantly hilly landscapes of Castiglione Torinese, where he lives with his family, the biker from Ciclistica Rostese has thrilled Italian cycling by winning two European titles at the recent Youth Continental Championships held in Jonkoping, Sweden.
What emotion did you experience?
"An incredible feeling I've never experienced before," explained the young Piedmontese rider. "I never would have expected to return home with two gold medals, but it really happened. I must say that winning the Short Track race was a surprise even for me. I had set out to do well, of course, but during the race everything went perfectly, and the satisfaction was immense. The Cross Country race was more in my comfort zone; I felt it, and after last year's second place, I was eager for redemption".
Davide Quattrone is thus a two-time European champion, having won both the Short Track and Cross Country events in the Under-14 category, meaning second-year beginners. For someone who started cycling at just 5 years old with Bussolino Sport Association, reaching such heights has been incredible. He didn't lack the right approach to the Swedish races: he has always been accompanied by his father Paolo, a great motorsport enthusiast who, thanks to his son, had to convert to the pedal sport of cycling, by his mother Silvia and his younger brother Andrea, who seems intent on dedicating himself to cycling. Multidisciplinarity is not Quattrone's forte, but before the end of this season, he would like to try some road races.
"I feel the duty and desire to try, especially because practicing road activity is important for an athlete's growth. I want to shift my focus to the road and see how I do. After all, many mountain bikers have a brilliant performance on a road bike. Just think of Gabriele Scagliola, who also races in the Rostese team and is a very good and promising road cyclist".
Davide has enrolled in the Scientific High School of Sports Sciences in Settimo Torinese and is directed by Massimo Benotto. For a fourteen-year-old (born in 2011), he has an impressive palmares: before the double European gold, he won the Italian Cross Country title in Albenga, the national silver in Short Track and with the Mixed Relay. Last year, he was twice Italian champion (Cross Country and Short Track), won silver in the national Eliminator, and bronze in the Team Relay. At the Europeans, always in Sweden (held in Husqvarna), he won silver in the Cross Country event behind Czech rider Sebastian Pnovsky.
