At just ten years old, Rupert has transformed the pain of his father's death into extraordinary strength: he will cycle for over two weeks, covering more than 1,000 kilometers and climbing the Pyrenees, to honor his memory and raise funds for the Children's Bereavement Centre, the charity that helped him and his mother Jess process their grief.
"Cycling has been a reference point for him since we lost his father," his mother told the BBC. "Each year he becomes stronger, and it's incredible to see how much commitment and determination he puts into it." Jess will accompany her son on the journey: "I'm a bit worried about keeping up with him, but I'm also very excited," she admits with a smile.
Originally from the Vale of Belvoir, in Leicestershire, Rupert and his mom will cover an average of 80 kilometers per day, with challenging stages like the 40-kilometer climb in the Pyrenees, where gradients exceed 10%.
This is not the first challenge for the little champion of courage: at just seven years old, he had already completed the London-Paris route, always to support children experiencing the loss of a loved one. "I want to help other children facing losses like mine," Rupert explained. "Not everyone receives the support that I had."
To prepare, he has trained hard with climbs, sprints, and long rides, demonstrating an extraordinary determination.
