The three-day Pyrenean adventure concludes with the classic mountain stage: the Pau - Luchon/Superbagnères covers 182.6 km and 4,950 meters of elevation gain. And fortunately, at least two of the three scheduled climbs will not be tackled from their most challenging sides...

The first 60 kilometers are flat, but the intermediate sprint in Esquièze-Sère, at km 70, arrives when the road starts climbing towards the Tourmalet, which will be approached from the Luz-Saint-Sauveur side (19 km at 7.4% average gradient). Then descending to Sainte-Marie-de Campan to climb the Col d'Aspin from the Payolle side (5 km at 7.6%).
Following that, the Col de Peyresourde (7.1 km at 7.8%) and finally a descent to Bagnères-de-Luchon to take the extremely demanding road that will lead to Superbagnères (12.4 km at 7.5%).
In practice, this is the same stage that was raced in the 1986 Tour, won by Greg Lemond with Bernard Hinault: a few days later, in the Col du Granon stage, the American would then snatch the leader's jersey from his teammate and carry it all the way to Paris.
