It's a definitely unfortunate start to the Giro Next Gen, heavily impacted by physical discomfort for the Sissio Team. Looking at the standings of the second stage of the Giro Next Gen, we were struck by noticing three Sissio Team athletes among the withdrawals, so we contacted Marco Toffali, sports director of the Veneto team, who explained to tuttobiciweb the reason for these forfeitures. "For a week, some of my guys haven't been feeling well. During the last training ride on local roads before leaving for the Giro, some of our athletes involuntarily drank from a fountain with water from a contaminated aquifer and now they are dealing with gastrointestinal problems. We have even filed a complaint with the Veneto Region because that fountain in the Fosse locality is a 'historic' fountain where many cyclists stop to drink," the Verona-based coach recounts.
He continues: "It seemed the situation was fairly resolved, but last night three or four guys from our team had a relapse. They started and tried to complete the stage, but being exhausted by these gastrointestinal problems, they couldn't manage it. It's truly unfortunate, we're sorry to have lost the three riders, but in the coming days with Leali and Cassani still in the race, we want to try to honor the race and make it to Pinerolo."
