Tomorrow will start the 88th edition of the Tour de Suisse, the twenty-fourth World Tour 2025 competition. So far, 69 riders have written their names in the golden book of the main Swiss stage race, representing 21 nations. The best of all time is the Italian Pasquale Fornara, first in as many as 4 instances: in 1952, 1954, 1957, and 1958.
Until now, 15 Italian riders have won the Tour de Suisse at least once, starting from Giovanni Valetti's triumph in 1938 to the last of the 19 successes by our standard-bearers, the one scored in 1999 by Francesco Casagrande. In the 24 subsequent editions, Italian cyclists have only obtained 5 second and 3 third places. The last of our movement's 57 total podiums remains the 2nd place achieved in 2017 by Damiano Caruso, behind the Slovenian Spilak.
The host country Switzerland leads the nations ranking with 23 victories and 74 overall podiums, but has not reached the top result since 2009, the year of Fabian Cancellara's triumph. In total, 11 riders have managed to achieve two consecutive wins (including Italians Bartali and Fornara), while the Portuguese Rui Costa is the only one in history who can boast a consecutive hat-trick (from 2012 to 2014).
