Michael Matthews is dealing with a serious physical issue and will be forced to withdraw from the Tour de France. Jayco AlUla has announced that during a recent high-altitude training camp, the GreenEDGE Cycling medical team discovered signs of pulmonary embolism and subsequently decided to suspend all physical activity for the cyclist until further notice, as a precautionary measure.
Matthews' health conditions are stable. The medical team is now thoroughly investigating the extent of the problem and its possible causes, to define a safe and optimal recovery path for the athlete. During this investigation period, as a safety measure, Matthews will abstain from competitions to ensure there are no risks to his health and well-being, thus excluding his participation in the upcoming Tour de France.
