Kasper Asgreen is an extraordinary rider, one of those who fought against everyone to become a cyclist, because his family wanted him to become a horseman. But after years of back and forth, Asgreen got off the horse and got on a bike, with the desire to become one of the strongest riders in Denmark. Not everything went well, but after important successes like the Tour of Flanders, something didn't work out and after many years with Lefevere, this year he moved to EF Education EasyPost. The Dane finally broke through and at the finish line in Nova Gorica, he returned to winning after almost 2 years without a victory.
"In the finale, honestly, I didn't think much. I was exhausted, very tired. I was trying to draw the descending curves because the road was slippery. I was trying to understand how much advantage I still had over those chasing me," Asgreen explained during the conference. "It has been a very difficult period, the team change was nonetheless important. I spent 7 years with my old team. I became a professional, I won important races with them. When I joined EF Education EasyPost I felt a bit of pressure, I didn't feel well, so I was trying to regain the team's confidence, but I also knew that physically I was not in great shape".
The spring with the new team didn't go well and the Dane was forced to skip important appointments. He knew that the Giro d'Italia would be his big opportunity and now that he has won, he can finally breathe a sigh of relief and look to the future with more optimism.
"I hadn't won for more than a year when I joined this team and this year I had to skip the Classics, but it was nice to return to a high level quite quickly. Probably if we had insisted on doing the Classics, where I would have had to lead the team, I wouldn't have made it, while today here I am with my victory".
Kasper Asgreen is happy with his new team, where he feels well received and feels that everyone has great confidence in his qualities.
"The confidence in the team has been extremely high from the first day. The main objective at the Giro is the general classification with Carapaz and seeing him finish among the top 10 in a group sprint like he did in Albania made us understand he was doing very well and this gave confidence to everyone. Once we got past the second time trial, the whole team lit up. We told each other: now the Giro begins. I think we have the opportunity to do well and I thank the team for giving me the chance to play for the victory today".
