For Australian Luke Plapp today's victory in Castelraimondo is the most beautiful of his career and winning with the Team Jayco AlUla jersey is an even greater satisfaction. "A few days ago this was our goal and it was last week too: we thought this stage could be perfect for me and then the whole team believed in me. It's a special day. In the finale I even had cramps in my left leg, but I only thought about going as fast as possible and in the end I won".
The Australian explained what it means to him to race with Jayco AlUla, the team from his Australia that he admired when he was young. Today Plapp raced with a wrist problem, but despite the discomfort, he continued to go fast to finish first at the Castelraimondo finish line.
"I have a small wrist problem, I feel pain, nothing that prevents me from racing. But I think I'll race with this discomfort until the end of the season. It was a special day not just for me, but for everyone who supports me, my family, my girlfriend, my team. A fantastic day".
Alessandro De Marchi wore the pink jersey in 2021 and this year, the Friulian who races with Jayco AlUla, is not present at the Italian race.
"He's a talented rider and I raced with him last year. I knew he wouldn't do the Giro but he will certainly have the opportunity to finish the season and his career well. I hoped he was here, but I think he will show that his career is not over, he will show it to everyone".
For the first time Plapp has won a stage of a grand tour and conquering results like this always gives great motivation to try to improve.
"It's nice to win anywhere, but winning a WorldTour race has definitely lifted a weight off my stomach. Last year I had difficulties and this year I wanted to come back to win. This victory was a great boost of confidence for me, it was nice to win. I'm living a dream, not just winning, but also racing in this team. When I was 12, I wanted to be part of this team, which has brought our culture around the world. I think it's a source of inspiration for young generations. When I had the opportunity to be part of this team, it was truly wonderful and they have done so much for me. Today is a great day for Team Jayco AlUla, because not only did I win, but Dylan Groenewegen also won in Hungary".
