The pink jersey Mads Pedersen was one of the victims of the serious crash during the sixth stage of the Giro, when around thirty riders went down.
After three stage victories, yesterday Pedersen no longer had his usual happy look and, arriving in Naples with the last group, he skipped the press conference, also because of an "institutional obligation": the pink jersey was expected by the commander of the Americo Vespucci, moored for the occasion just a few meters from the finish line. "I've seen better days, let's put it that way" - said the Dane after the finish line - "Falling at 70 kilometers per hour downhill is never fun. Now I definitely feel a lot of pain all over my body".
The fact that Pedersen fell behind the group in the finale was due to the crash and not to any jury decision with neutralization of the stage and thus without the possibility of scoring points. "If I could, I would have liked to race. But when you fall on the asphalt with the same force as I did today, it's not so straightforward anymore".
The Dane might still wear the pink jersey for a few more days, but due to the crash and especially today's mountain stage, the possibility seems to be hanging by a thread. The seventh stage will be characterized by the first mountain top finish. In the standings, Pedersen has an advantage of only seventeen seconds over Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), and today the favorite for the final victory could be the Slovenian.
