An unlucky Arrow for the king of Amstel Gold Race: Mattias Skjelmose was indeed the victim of a crash that occurred 41 km from the conclusion. In a right-angle curve, he perhaps leaned too much on the wet asphalt: Skjelmose ended up against the curb and hit his right knee and left arm.
In the crash that happened around the seventh-eighth position of the group, also on the ground were his teammates Julien Bernard and Patrick Konrad, Belgian Ilan Van Wilder from Soudal Quick Step, and Swiss Jan Christen from UAE Emirates XRG.
Skjelmose himself appeared the most painful among the fallen riders and only after a few minutes decided to get back in the saddle and start pedaling again, not so much to get back in the race but probably to regain some confidence with the bicycle. In fact, after a few kilometers, the Dane raised the white flag and withdrew.
