ALULA TOUR, TOM PIDCOCK CELEBRATES HIS FIRST SUCCESS WITH Q36.5 AND LEADS THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION: FANCELLU 10TH
PROFESSIONALS | 29/01/2025 | 14:03 di Federico Guido At the conclusion of 132 kilometers of racing, Tom Pidcock put his signature on the second stage of the AlUla Tour. The British rider - who joined Q36.5 Pro Cycling this year - dropped all his wheel competitors by attacking with 500 meters to go, thus conquering his first 2025 success with a handful of seconds advantage over Rainer Kepplinger from Bahrain – Victorious. In third and fourth positions came Alan Hatherly and Eddie Dunbar, both from Team Jayco Alula, while Alessandro Fancellu from Team Ukyo crossed the finish line at Bir Jaydah Mountain Wirkah in tenth position, emerging as the best Italian.
THE RACE REPORT. The incredibly fast start, hovering around 70 km/h, immediately saw five riders break away from the inhabited center of Alula: Simone Raccani (JCL Team Ukyo), the combativity jersey wearer Muhammad Nur Aiman Bin Rosli together with Muhammad Shahmir Aiman Abdul Halim (Terengganu Cycling Team), Longphob Thimachai (Roojai Insurance) and Jens Reinders (Wagner Bazin WB). After a few kilometers, the quintet's advantage flew well beyond 2 minutes, but when the men from Q36.5, Jayco-Alula, and PicNic PostNL got to work, the gap quickly settled around 120 seconds. Thanks to a subsequent peloton slowdown, however, the gap widened again, and the quintet's margin reached 3 minutes. The approach of the first intermediate sprint then ignited the breakaway's spirits, with Rosli pushing his companions to reinforce his leadership in the combativity classification. This move caused Timachai to lose contact but allowed the orange jersey to obtain the points at the intermediate sprint (won ahead of Reinders and his teammate Halim) and subsequently detach himself satisfied from the leading group. Three riders then took the lead in the final circuit (to be repeated twice) and then the tough final climb. However, on the first ramps, Haslim could not keep up with Raccani and Reinders, who passed first over the finish line shoulder to shoulder, beginning the two decisive laps. At the top, the jury then decided to remove one of the two scheduled laps and neutralize the dangerous descent between the supply point and the attack of the final climb, a measure that significantly changed the finale's evolution. Reinders and Raccani, once their slim advantage was recovered at the moment of the stop, were reabsorbed by the group with 3 kilometers to go, which immediately lined up. Waiting dominated, and everyone controlled each other until the last few hundred meters where, after carefully monitoring the opponents' movements with great ease, Tom Pidcock left everyone behind with a scorching acceleration to conquer his first victory in the Q36.5 jersey with margin. Behind him, in the places of honor were Rainer Kepplinger (very determined like his entire Bahrain-Victorious team) and Alan Heatherly (Jayco-Alula), who from tomorrow will be the British rider's first rivals in the general classification, given their respective 8 and 13 seconds behind the green jersey worn on the podium of the second stage by the Olympic MTB champion.
