ENRICO DELLA CASA ANNOUNCES HIS RE-CANDIDACY FOR UEC PRESIDENT
POLITICS | 28/01/2025 | 09:50 Enrico Della Casa, current President of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC), has officially announced his candidacy for a new mandate leading the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC) for the 2025-2029 period. The elections for UEC leadership renewal will take place during the Congress scheduled in Bratislava (Slovakia) on March 9th. The announcement, anticipated during the last UEC Congress in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in March 2024, represents the intention to consolidate and continue a growth path initiated in 2013, the year when the manager from Correggio assumed the role of Secretary General, a position he held until 2021 before being elected President. "From 2013 to today, together with Presidents David Lappartient and Rocco Cattaneo, we have undertaken a significant development path that has transformed the UEC into a modern, efficient, and recognized organization in the European sports landscape. Thanks to this joint commitment, the UEC is now a leading technical partner of the European Olympic Committee and a key actor in organizing cycling events such as the European Games and the European Youth Olympic Festival," Della Casa stated. During his mandate, the UEC has expanded the cycling events calendar, ensuring equal opportunities for all disciplines, including those traditionally less visible. A significant milestone was achieved in title and prize money equality between men and women, underlining the confederation's commitment to increasing balance in sports. Particular attention was paid to young athletes, with the organization of European Mountain Bike and Cyclocross Championships for ages 13 to 16, which registered enthusiastic participation. Moreover, the agreement renewed until 2029 with Eurovision Sport has guaranteed unprecedented television visibility for major European Championships, including Road, Track, BMX Racing, BMX Freestyle Park, Mountain Bike, and Cyclocross. Among the initiatives launched during his mandate, the UEC Forest project, started in 2022, stands out. It led to planting 59 trees across Europe, contributing to raising awareness about environmental sustainability and promoting greater ecological consciousness within the sports world. Despite the achievements, Della Casa emphasizes that numerous challenges remain: "Much remains to be done to ensure consistent cycling development in all 51 affiliated European countries. I deeply believe in sport as a universal language that promotes meeting and cohesion among peoples. Therefore, we intend to strengthen our commitment to solidarity and promote the universality of our movement, particularly supporting athletes from contexts with fewer resources." In the current socio-economic context, Della Casa reaffirms the centrality of young people in his program: "They are our most precious asset. We want them to have all necessary opportunities to grow, experience sport with passion, and become tomorrow's champions." Concluding his announcement, Enrico Della Casa expressed confidence in the future of European cycling: "There is still much work to be done, but I am convinced that together we can continue to grow European cycling and promote the universal values that this sport represents."
