TOUR DOWN UNDER. WELSFORD WINS THE OPENING SPRINT: 19-YEAR-OLD BRENNAN AND WALLS DEFEATED. MOSCA 10TH

We had already seen him win at the Australian Criterium Championship and also a couple of days ago at the Villawood Men's Classic: Sam Welsford did it again just now at the finish line in Gumeracha, where the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under concluded.

The 29-year-old Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe rider imposed himself in the sprint that opened the Australian stage race, beating British riders Matthew Brennan (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Matthew Walls (Groupama - FDJ), German Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl - Trek) and Ben Swift (INEOS Grenadiers), who finished in fifth place. Among the best of the day was also Jacopo Mosca, who crossed the finish line in tenth position.

The opening stage of the Tour Down Under 2025, which started without Manlio Moro and Miles Scotson - forced to withdraw after the fall at the Villawood Men's Classic Criterium - "ignited" from the start in Prospect with several attacks that led to the breakaway by Bastien Tronchon, a 22-year-old Frenchman from the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team, and Australians Zac Marriage and Fergus Browning, racing with the National Team.

Pedaling by mutual agreement, the trio immediately took a significant advantage over the group, and Marriage, winner of a stage at the Tour de l'Ain and U23 national champion in road and time trial this year, conquered the first mountain prize of the day at Kangaroo Creek Reservoir, beating his breakaway companions.

Tronchon instead imposed himself at the Williamstown Intermediate Sprint with bonifications after 41 kilometers of racing, shortly after slowing down and abandoning the breakaway, being then caught by the peloton. The two 21-year-old Australians remained at the front, and after the first passage through the finish area, Browning anticipated his breakaway companion at the top of Berry Hill Climb, securing the best climber's jersey, while the Birdwood Intermediate Sprint was won by Marriage. With 28 kilometers to go, Browning won more important points for the climbers' classification by winning the Berry Hill mountain prize again, but a handful of kilometers later, the peloton caught up with the attackers, definitively nullifying their breakaway.

In the final part of the race, especially UAE Team Emirates - XRG and Bahrain - Victorious set the pace of the compact group, and around the -7 km mark, the various sprinters' trains organized themselves. About two kilometers from the finish, Australian champion Durbridge crashed along with other athletes; the group split, thus reducing the contenders for the day's victory. Sam Welsford also takes the leader's jersey of the Tour Down Under, which he will wear tomorrow at the start of the stage with start and finish in Tanunda. The Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe athlete is also the points classification leader, while 19-year-old Matthew Brennan is leading the young riders' classification.
