JANUARY 2ND, COPPI AND BARTALI TOGETHER ON THE THREAD OF MEMORY

In Castellania Coppi, the town where the "Heron" was born on January 15, 1919, as usual the Welcome Castellania awards were presented on the anniversary of Coppi's death. It is a tradition, an appointment that the most devoted Coppi fans never miss, and yesterday, 65 years after the Campionissimo's death, hundreds of people once again came from all over the peninsula to pay homage to the Piedmontese cyclist. After the ceremony celebrated in the small church of Castellania, in front of the monument tomb where Fausto and Serse Coppi rest, the Welcome Castellania awards, dedicated to sports journalism and sports benefactors, were presented. This year the prize went to Guido Vaciago, director of TuttoSport, Maurizio Iappini reporter for La Stampa, Guido Repetto President of Gruppo Elah Dufour Novi and to the Team Chiodini – Magenta as ambassadors of Casa Coppi in the World. Among the various moments was the presentation of the yellow jersey and pink jersey of Tadej Pogacar, which the Slovenian champion donated to Casa Coppi, as well as the yellow jersey of Sandrino Carrea, Coppi's historic domestique. In Assisi, instead, many people decided to visit the Memory Museum 1943-1944 where some memories are preserved of the Tuscan champion who, during World War II, by transporting documents in the frame of his bicycle, managed to save many Jews. Assisi still pays homage to Gino Bartali and, despite the cold and unfavorable weather, many made a bicycle pilgrimage to the Memory Museum of the Umbrian town to remember Ginaccio's feats. In the museum, there are many testimonies of Bartali's work during the war years, when there were no more races, he would ride his bike to Assisi to transport documents that would save many people. In the town of San Francesco, many come to the Museum every year to remember Bartali's story, and even yesterday, a large group of daredevils wanted to challenge the rain and cold: departing from Florence, they decided to retrace the same road that Gino used to reach Assisi, among them were not only Tuscans but also some enthusiasts from the United States who decided to retrace the journey where the hero met the saint. Yesterday, today, and certainly tomorrow, Gino and Fausto have raced together on the thread of memory, as witnesses of an epic cycling that, even years later, still fascinates thousands of people around the world.
