LUIGI IVO BENSA. A STORY, A THOUSAND STORIES (AND PLENTY OF CYCLING)

"A DREAM, PASSION AND HISTORY: TESTIMONIES OF A SPORTING FAITH COMMITMENT": this is the cover title of a well-documented publication signed by LUIGI IVO BENSA with the collaboration of journalist GRAZIANO CONSIGLIERI that retraces, step by step, the life of an octogenarian, the Imperian Luigi Ivo Bensa of Oneglia, an age he obviously shares with his twin brother Maes, a name that, in the intentions of the two Bensa's father, Armando, born on May 15, 1936, wanted to remember, and did so, the Belgian champion Sylvère MAES, winner of the Tour de France in 1936 and 1939 and Roubaix in 1933, later also national team coach, of whom he was evidently a devoted fan. He is portrayed smiling on the back cover with his friend and almost fellow citizen Giuseppe Perletto, a notable climber.
It is truly a long story, more than sixty years, for Luigi Ivo Bensa who, together with his friend Graziano Consiglieri, has condensed - so to speak - into 240 pages with tiny, very tiny typographic characters that require ten-tenths vision to read. In this case, he did not exactly follow the often-mentioned "Ligurian parsimony" with the documented, meticulous, extremely detailed chronicle of his years as a Civil Motor Vehicle Office official in Imperia, equally as provincial CONI president, especially his cycling passion, inherited from his father, with an international, top-level career, starting from the role of finish judge to that of jury college president in the context of first-rate events, in various parts of the world, when the globalization pursued by the UCI was beginning.
Personally, he is a man of few, but clear, words. In the case of this publication, however, he remembered, reconstructed, contextualized his three roles, especially those in the sports and family spheres, with continuous citations of episodes, events and people, often personalities, especially in the world of two wheels, an environment that continues to attract his constant interest even if his personal presence is limited by autonomous walking possibilities, as he would like.
We consider it impossible to condense or cite the names that Luigi Ivo Bensa proposes in his writing, to which he dedicated a year of research, care and writing. The iconographic documentation is also abundant that is inserted among the dense, thick lines of the book that opens with a significant, concise, heartfelt preface by Luigi Ivo Bensa.
A life testimony that Ivo willingly makes available to lifelong friends with whom he has spent, and spends, parts of a long and satisfying journey, without "grumbling" to use a Genoese term extensible to all of Liguria, without regrets or various claims but declined positively both for the long past and the near future.
