THOMAS'S FINAL SEASON. "THE CLASSICS ARE TOO CRAZY FOR ME. FROM DOWN UNDER ONWARDS, ONLY STAGE RACES"

The season about to begin will be Geraint Thomas's last as a professional and once again we'll see him race in the Tour de France. Initially, there was also thought of the Paris-Roubaix for the Welshman, but Ineos Grenadiers, through a video shared on social media, announced that the race of stones would not be in his program. Thomas will start 2025 in Australia at the Tour Down Under and might also include the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Volta a Catalunya.
"This will be my tenth Tour Down Under: it's the best place to start the year, I'll spend a month or five weeks in Australia with consistent training. The weather will always be nice and ideally, you can also bring your family there."
The choice to start the season in Australia is due to several factors, mainly the fact that by January, four and a half months will have passed since his last competition: Thomas last raced on September 1st, when he completed the Tour Renewi. "My last race was at the beginning of September and then I stopped. A lot of time has passed since the last race, which is why I thought of starting precisely with the Down Under and then do an entire preparation block in Australia. I think it's the best way to prepare for the new year."
At the beginning of winter, Thomas had said that he would have liked to race Paris-Roubaix in his final professional season: at 38 years old, however, he has reached a certain awareness and thinks that one-day races like Roubaix are too difficult given that falls can never be ruled out. For this reason, the Welshman has decided, for his last year as a rider, to prefer stage races like the Tour de France, which he won in 2018. "I think I'll return to the Algarve and then some other stage races, like Tirreno, Catalunya. The classics are a bit too crazy for me, I think you have to be ready to fall and hurt yourself and all the rest, I'm not sure I have the strength to do that anymore. I would like to do another Tour, who knows, maybe the Tour of Britain to end my career."
