HAPPY HOLIDAYS. TAROZZI LOOKS AHEAD TO 2025: «I'D LIKE TO DO WELL AT COPPI E BARTALI AND GIRO D'ITALIA»
INTERVIEW | 24/12/2024 | 15:00 di Federico Guido The season that ended a few weeks ago has been the best professional season so far for Manuele Tarozzi. The rider of VF Group - Bardiani CSF – Faizanè concluded his third year among the cycling elite with two victories (the third stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake and the sixth stage of the Tour de Langkawi) and seven overall top 10 finishes in 81 race days, numbers that the 1998 class rider from Faenza (who was the rider with the most kilometers in a breakaway in 2024) had never recorded before and from which he will restart next year with even more determination to improve further. Meanwhile, we spoke to him to understand how he spent the last few weeks, how he is experiencing the preparation, and how he will spend the holidays. How is the training camp going? What's the atmosphere like and what work are you doing? "We more or less stopped cycling at the end of October and have only recently started again, so now we're doing 4-5 hours without major workouts. This is ultimately the most important moment of the retreat because in about a month we'll already be racing. The team atmosphere is like last year because here practically nothing has changed (two riders left), we all know each other and everything is easier, more enjoyable compared to when I joined two years ago. The new juniors haven't come because they have school, but the Colombians are here." Plans for Christmas and New Year's? Have you ever allowed or do you usually allow yourself some indulgence? "We'll finish the retreat on December 23rd, so we'll return home for Christmas, on the 28th I'll have the fan club dinner and then around the 8th or 9th, some earlier, some later, we'll all fly back to Spain. Indulgence? At Christmas and New Year's, no one holds back. You're on vacation after all. I know there are people obsessed with this, but I've never had any issues. Maybe, instead of eating three plates of cappelletti in broth, which we always have in Romagna for Christmas, you eat one, but that's not what makes the difference." Talking about the new year, do you already have an idea of your schedule? "From what we know now, we'll race in Mallorca (so in about a month) and then do the Valenciana. More or less, the calendar will be the same as always. The team hasn't yet drawn up a definitive program because, as every year, we have to wait for invitations. A race where I'd like to return and do well? I'd say Coppi e Bartali (where in 2024 he won the best climber jersey, ed.) because it passes near my home, and then, like all Italians, the Giro d'Italia, where it would be nice to win a stage, but I think many dream of that." How did you spend the period away from cycling? Where were you? "I spent twenty days in the Seychelles, and it was my honeymoon because I got married this June, and given the timing, we already knew we couldn't do it then. Two weeks after the wedding, I left for Qinghai Lake. So we decided to make up for it at the end of the season: I usually always did three, four days, maximum a week, no more, but this year we extended it by two weeks. We found great weather, and if you want to be by the sea, it's the perfect place: vegetation reaches right up to the beach, it's warm but pleasant in the evening... beautiful." If we were to make an overall assessment of your 2024, instead? "My season was positive, I'm happy with what I've done. Perhaps I expected a bit more, but I won two races, so all in all, I can be satisfied. The many kilometers in the breakaway? I move like this because currently, I see that I don't yet have the rhythm of the best riders, so I anticipate in the hope that the group will sleep and miscalculate, and then I can play it out in a small group. For now, I've always raced like this."
