VAN AERT BETWEEN RECOVERY AND DOUBTS: CYCLOCROSS CAN WAIT FOR NOW

Wout Van Aert returned from Spain last weekend and this week he is in the Netherlands for the Visma-Lease a Bike team days, whose program will include bike assembly and various tests with bike adjustments, photo services, and a team building event next Friday.
Last Sunday there was a cyclocross race in Antwerp, an appointment which the Flemish rider has rarely missed in recent years, but at this stage it is still difficult to say when he will make his cyclocross debut.
In any case, his return cannot be before December 19th, after the team's retreat in Spain. The intention for now is that Van Aert will perfect his road racing preparation, and only when he has reached certain objectives, will the green light for cyclocross turn on. The first part of the training did not go as the team had hypothesized. Certainly, Van Aert has fully recovered from the fall at the Vuelta, but his knee is still causing him pain and this has caused a slowdown in the first part of his preparation, so cyclocross will have to wait.
During the Vuelta, the Flemish rider had suffered a deep cut on his knee and a bruise while descending the Collada Llomena. The hematoma took a long time to heal, and this made it extremely painful for him to put weight on his right leg. The worst has passed, and although training has resumed, there is still some discomfort when the Belgian walks.
Fortunately, in the fall he did not suffer any structural damage to the knee, meaning no damage to the kneecap, cartilage, or ligaments was reported. Van Aert has resumed all activities, and there are no risks that the work could compromise the knee's condition and cause a new blockage. The team is optimistic for now and is certain that there will be no problems by next spring.
The falls in 2024 have strongly impacted the Flemish rider's season. The crash at Through Flanders ruined the Classics season, where Van Aert would have been a protagonist, and the long recovery then prevented him from participating in the Giro d'Italia. Visma-Lease a Bike wants to cancel what happened this season, trying to work at their best to arrive at 2025 ready for important appointments. The cyclocross issue is still to be resolved, and clear information will have to wait another couple of weeks. The only certainty at the moment is that Van Aert will definitely take part in some cyclocross races, because it has been seen that mud races help him complete his physical preparation for the road season. Therefore, cyclocross fans can be calm, and by the end of the year, they will still be able to enjoy the duels between Van Aert and Van der Poel in cyclocross.
