The 2024 UCI Track Champions League started with a bang in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines: nearly 4,000 spectators watched in awe as Katie Archibald (Great Britain), Dylan Bibic (Canada), Emma Finucane (Great Britain), and Matthew Richardson (Great Britain) donned the coveted blue leader jerseys in their respective categories.
Katie Archibald enjoyed a picture-perfect season opener, winning both the Scratch and Elimination races to top the Women's Endurance standings, ready to defend her title.
Matthew Richardson mirrored her performance, securing the maximum 40 points in the Men's Sprint by winning both Sprint and Keirin races.
Emma Finucane crowned an almost impeccable night for Great Britain, leading the Women's Sprint classification with a Sprint race victory and second place in the Keirin, won by Alina Lysenko (AIN), absolutely dominant in her UCI Track Champions League debut.

In Men's Endurance, Dylan Bibic won the Scratch race, with a fourth place in a highly contested Elimination race, decisively won by Will Perrett (Great Britain), enough to return to the leader's jersey and on track to defend his 2023 title.

THE CHRONICLE. The Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines crowd witnessed an exhilarating start, with the women's scratch race exploding just six laps from the end.
Olivija Baleisyte (Lithuania) took advantage of a slowdown to break away and accumulate an almost half-lap lead. Anna Morris (Great Britain) caught her and seemed to have victory in the bag at the start of the last lap, but her teammate Katie Archibald (Great Britain) calculated her move to perfection, overtaking Morris on the straight.
The men's scratch followed the same script, with Dylan Bibic (Canada) signing a dream start. He triumphed over home favorite Clément Petit (France) in a reduced sprint after a group of five riders broke away with just a handful of laps to go, with Keegan Hornblow (New Zealand) finishing third.
The day's first surprise came in the Women's Sprint, with Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand) eliminated in the semifinal by Martha Bayona (Colombia), who secured the final to face UCI World Champion Emma Finucane (Great Britain), who prevailed with a powerful action on
the final straight.
The Men's Sprint saw the return of one of the greatest rivalries in track cycling, with Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands) facing Matthew Richardson (Great Britain).
Both had dominated their heats and semifinals, but Richardson firmly took control in the final, starting from the top of the track and overtaking Lavreysen with one lap to go.
Another surprise came in the
Women's Elimination when Archibald's biggest rival, Anita Stenberg, was eliminated relatively early, the tenth cyclist to exit the race. Archibald fully exploited her rival's elimination to win, pocketing all 40 available points. Immediately behind her, Yareli Acevedo (Mexico) and Neah Evans (Great Britain).
In the Men's Elimination, Bibic saw many of his opponents exit early but was caught off guard and finished fourth, with another of his main rivals, Lindsay de Vylder (Belgium), coming in third. The home crowd went wild when the young
Oscar Nilsson-Julien (France) clashed with Will Perrett for victory, but the Briton authoritatively claimed his first victory in the UCI Track Champions League since 2022.
The first night of action in the 2024 UCI Track Champions League concluded with the Keirin races. It was Alina Lysenko's moment, winning by several bike lengths over Emma Finucane and third-placed Steffie van der Peet (Netherlands).
In the Men's Keirin, another battle between Matthew Richardson and Harrie Lavreysen, with both riders having dominated their heats. Spectators expected a tight battle, but when the Briton overtook his Dutch rival, he even had time to celebrate before the finish line, concluding a spectacular evening with a length advantage, touching an incredible top speed of 77.1 km/h, with Kevin Quintero (Colombia) completing the podium in third place.
