From the light-colored jersey of UAE Team ADQ to the blue, red, and black of FDJ Suez: Sofia Bertizzolo will leave the Emirates team, with which she has raced in the last four years, to join the French team. The agreement between the 28-year-old cyclist from Vicenza and the team managed by Team Manager Stephen Delcourt was officially announced in recent hours with a statement from FDJ Suez.
In the top category of women's cycling since 2016, Sofia can boast three victories so far: in the first stage of the Tour de Romandie 2023, the Oro in Euro Trophy in 2022, and La Classique Morbihan 2021. Not to mention the podiums she conquered this year at GP Oetingen, GP Liberazione, and the second stage of Tour de Pologne, nor those of the Trofeo Binda and Giro dell'Emilia 2022, or the fourth place at the Giro delle Fiandre 2019 won by Marta Bastianelli.
"For years, we have hoped to see Sofia Bertizzolo wear our colors, and with patience and determination, our paths have finally crossed. Sofia arrives with ten years of experience at the highest levels. She is a cyclist with great tactical intelligence, consistent and with the rare ability to put herself at the service of others to help them emerge, as well as obtain good results for herself. Her arrival is an important reinforcement for FDJ Suez; we are confident that her experience and mentality will be valuable resources for the next season, both for our leaders and for the younger athletes," said Delcourt.
Sofia herself said: "I am happy and proud to become part of a team whose colors I have seen in the group since my debut as a Pro. FDJ-SUEZ is indeed one of the women's teams present in the group for the longest time, it has evolved and become one of the best World Tour teams. I am happy to be able to count on so much experience and solidity."
The announcement of Bertizzolo's jersey change comes shortly after that of Alessia Vigilia, who will leave FDJ Suez at the end of the year to join Uno X. Other cycling market movements involving Italian athletes, as we recall, include: the transfer of Laura Tomasi from Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi to Uno X and the arrival of Letizia Borghesi at AG Insurance - Soudal Team.
