LAMPRE MERIDA. Grmay, primo etiope al Tour

Nel Tour de France 2016, la LAMPRE-MERIDA contribuirà a scrivere un nuovo capitolo della storia della corsa francese e lo farà grazie a Tsgabu Gebremaryam Grmay, primo corridore etiope a partecipare alla Grande Boucle.

Capita quindi che un ragazzino nato a Mekele, città sita a 2000 metri di altitudine, arrivi a tracciare, pedalata dopo pedalata, nuovi limiti per le frontiere del ciclismo.
Grmay è ciclista vero, uno scalatore efficace, come ha dimostrato nel 2015 completando sia il Giro d'Italia che la Vuelta a Espana, e come ha recentemente ribadito affrontando da protagoniste le salite del Criterium du Dauphiné e ottenendo il secondo posto nella classifica dei migliori scalatori.

L'etiope della LAMPRE-MERIDA è pronto per tornare in Francia, pieno di emozioni e orgoglio.

- Sarai al via del Tour de France, è un sogno che diventa realtà?
Certo! La partecipazione al Tour de France è da tanto tempo un mio sogno. Grazie a Dio ora lo vivrò realmente.

- Quando hai visto per la prima volta il Tour de France in vita tua?
Il mio primo ricordo relativo al Tour de France risale al 2007, l’edizione vinta da Alberto Contador.
Ho ancora ben presente come rimasi affascinato nel vedere tanti campioni battagliare in salita.

- Che effetto fa sapere di essere il primo ciclista etiope a partecipare al Tour de France?
Sono molto molto felice. Non posso ancora credere che tra qualche giorno sarò al Tour! Come detto, la Grande Boucle è un sogno che si avvera.
E’ stato un lunghissimo percorso quello che mi ha portato dall’Etiopia al via del Tour de France: qualche anno fa, se avessi pensato di partire dall’Etiopia e arrivare a partecipare al Tour, avrei ritenuto fosse impossibile per me e per qualsiasi altro ragazzo etiope. Ora, invece, tutto ciò sta cambiando…sto per dimostrare che questo è possibile, sono tanto contento e pieno di orgoglio.

- Chi vorresti ringraziare per questa opportunità?
Per prima cosa, ringrazio Dio.
Sono riconoscente a tutta la mia famiglia e tutti i miei amici e sostenitori dall’Etiopia e da tutto il mondo, con un grazie speciale alla mia fidanzata.
Ringrazio poi tutte le persone che mi hanno supportato nella mia carriera, in ordine cronologico: Jean-Pierre Van Zyl (JP), che mi ha scovato in Etiopia e mi ha dato molte opportunità e insegnamenti fondamentali per diventare un ciclista.
Il World Cycling Center dell’UCI e il Team MTN QHUBEKA e Douglas Ryder, oltre al mio agente Robbie Hunter e al mio consulente per la preparazione Michele Bartoli, grandi campioni che mi stanno dando un supporto importante.
Ritengo inoltre fondamentale ringraziare la mia squadra, LAMPRE-MERIDA, e gli sponsor del team per le opportunità offertemi e per tutto ciò che stanno facendo per me negli ultimi due anni, con un pensiero particolare dedicato a Brent Copeland, che ha sempre creduto nel mio talento e mi ha dato la possibilità di diventare un buon corridore e di imprimere una svolta alla mia vita!

- Quanto pensi sia importante la tua partecipazione alla Grande Boucle per ispirare una nuova generazione di ciclisti etiopi?
E’ un evento molto significativo per il ciclismo etiope.
Da ora in poi, ogni ciclista in Etiopia inizierà a pedalare pensando che niente è impossibile, che anche grandi traguardi possono essere raggiunti, Tour de France incluso.
Questo significa che ogni ciclista pedalerà contando su una grande spinta interiore che lo condurrà verso i rispettivi obiettivi, non importa che siano grandi o piccoli, l’importante è che si dia il massimo per raggiungerli e per apprezzare il ciclismo.
Sono davvero contento di poter essere d’ispirazione per nuove generazioni, mi ritengo fortunato a poter avere questo ruolo.

- Quale risultato dovrai raggiungere per essere soddisfatto al termine del Tour?
In Francia lotterò con tutto il mio cuore per raggiungere risultati di rilievo per me e per la squadra. Solo così potrò verificare fino a quale livello ciclistico potrò arrivare al Tour, solo così potrò essere soddisfatto di ciò che avrò ottenuto.

- Nella selezione della LAMPRE-MERIDA per il Tour de France conviveranno atleti provenienti da 7 differenti nazioni: pensi sia un fattore positivo o non è sempre semplice la coesistenza e la comunicazione all’interno di un gruppo così eterogeneo?
Non credo alla differenza tra nazioni, credo nel cuore di ogni singolo atleta.
Il nostro gruppo può contare su corridori forti dal cuore buono. Sono sicuro che la squadra disputerà un eccellente Tour de France.

- I tuoi genitori e i tuoi parenti ti guarderanno tramite la tv? La corsa sarà trasmessa in Etiopia?
Sì! Tutti i miei parenti e tutti gli appassionati di ciclismo in Etiopia saranno davanti alla tv per guardare la corsa. Non vedo l’ora di farmi guardare da tutti loro mentre sarò in Francia!

In the Tour de France 2016, LAMPRE-MERIDA will write a page of the book of history of the Tour de France thanks to Tsgabu Gebremaryam Grmay, who'll be the first Ethiopian cyclist to participate in the Grande Boucle.

Born in Mekele, Ethiopian city at 2000 meters of altitude, covering kilometers after kilometers on his bikes, Grmay set new limits for the cycling.
LAMPRE-MERIDA's Ethiopian cyclist is a pure climber and his level of skills is confirmed by the participation in the Giro d'Italia 2015 and Vuelta a Espana 2015 (both races completed) and by the performances on the mountains of the recent Criterium du Dauphiné, where he obtained the 2nd place in the best climbers classification.

Tsgabu is ready to come back to France.

-You’ll be at the Tour de France, is this a dream coming true?
Yes sure! The participation in the Tour de France it's my long time dream. Thanks to God now I am going to do it!

- When did you see the Tour de France for the first time in your life?
First time I saw the Tour de France was in 2007, when Alberto Contador win the Tour.
I was so excited to see such cycling champions battling on the great climbs.

- What are you feeling knowing that you’ll be the first Ethiopian cyclist to participate in the Tour de France?
I am so so so happy. I still I can't believe that I am going to do the Tour! As I said, the Grande Boucle is my long time dream.
It was very long way coming from Ethiopia to race the Tour de France: few years ago, when you were thinking about coming from Ethiopia and participating in the Tour de France, it was something impossible for me and for all Ethiopian people. But now this thing is going to change... I am going to show that is possible and I am really really happy and proud.

- Who do you want to thank for this opportunity?
First I will like to thank God.
Then I thank my whole family and all the friends and fans from Ethiopia and from all around the world. A special thank also to my girlfriend.
In chronological order, I thank the persons who supported me in my career: Jean-Pierre Van Zyl (JP), who found me in Ethiopia and giving me a lot of opportunity and teach me a lot of things which were important for becoming a cyclist.
The World Cycling Centre from the Uci and then Team MTN QHUBEKA and Douglas Ryder and also my agent Robbie Hunter and my trainer Michele Bartoli, who were great cycling champions and now are helping me a lot.
It’s also very important for me to thank my team, Lampre-Merida, and the team’s sponsors for giving me this opportunity and for all things what the team have done for me for the last two years, with a special thanks to Brent Copeland, who believes in my talent and he gives me a chance to be a good rider and to change my life too!

- How much important do you think will be your participation for inspiring a new generation of Ethiopian cyclists?
I believe it's big thing for the Ethiopian cycling. Every cyclist from Ethiopia now will start cycling thinking it's possible to achieve big goals and maybe also participating in the Tour de France.
This means that they’ll cycle with one of the biggest power inside them for achieving their goals, big or small doesn’t matter, it’s important that they’ll do their best and enjoy cycling.
I am so happy and lucky to inspire the new generations by this way.

- You’ll be happy at the end of the Tour de France if you’ll have achieved which goals?
In this Tour de France, I will fight from all my heart and I really want to make a good result for myself and for my team. So I will see what I will be able do in this Tour and at the end of the Tour I will be grateful with what I have got.

- In the LAMPRE-MERIDA’s line-up for the Tour de France there will be 7 nations represented: do you feel is something good or it’s difficult to coexist and to communicate in a mixed group?
Personally I don't believe in different nations. I believe in every single rider’s heart. Our group can count on really strong riders with good hearts. I am sure this team will race a good Tour de France.

- Will your parents and relatives watch you on tv? Will the race will be broadcasted in Ethiopia?
Yes. All Ethiopian people have been watched for many years the Tour de France.
Now also all my family and all Ethiopian people who loves cycling will watching the race on tv. I am so excited to show my self out there!
