The queen is still her, Lorena Wiebes, but this time the phenomenal Dutch rider had to work extremely hard and managed only at the photo finish to get the better of Ireland's Lara Gillespie and claim the world scratch title.
Wiebes, the overwhelming favorite heading into the race, took a real risk by riding in fourth position for the final two laps and therefore covering more ground than her rivals. She launched her sprint with a lap and a half remaining, made her decisive move at 150 meters to go, and ultimately won by the narrowest of margins over Gillespie, with Portugal's Maria Martins taking third place and Italian Martina Fidanza, clearly out of contention for the medals, finishing fourth.
For Lorena Wiebes, this marks her third consecutive world championship victory.
