Remco Evenepoel finished fourth in the Giro di Lombardia, at the end of a race won by the unstoppable Paul Seixas. The Frenchman claimed his first Monument Classic ahead of Enric Mas and Giulio Ciccone.
The Belgian, new European champion, crossed the finish line in a sprint with the chasing group, managing to beat his rivals for fourth place. Despite some difficulties and losing contact at various points during the race, Evenepoel confirmed he gave everything he had.
«What Seixas did was incredibly impressive - he said after the finish -. I felt good, but fatigue started to set in. In the final hour I wasn't at my best and since the Tour I haven't regained my best form. In races like this, your condition doesn't lie».
Evenepoel explained that he handled the first climb of San Fermo well, before the tiredness took its toll: «My legs started to fill with lactic acid. It wasn't my best day, but it wasn't a bad day either. We did what we set out to do».
Fourth place came thanks to his tenacity. «I'm not someone who gives up. I knew Ciccone was within reach and that we were fighting for the podium, but today wasn't the right day to make it. In the end I didn't give up and managed to secure a good fourth place»».
The European champion's season thus concludes with a positive result, even if just outside the podium. Now Evenepoel will take a few days off before returning to meet with the team to define the objectives and races to focus on in the next season.
