Demi Vollering's trophy cabinet has been enriched with a new title and a new jersey: after the rainbow jersey conquered a week ago in Montreal, the talented Dutch rider has claimed the European Championship in Slovenia solo, wearing the starred jersey that she had already made her own last year.
Vollering built her success by attacking when fifteen kilometers remained to the finish and then crossed the line in Šenčur with a 5-second advantage over her Dutch teammate Puck Pieterse and Swiss rider Marlen Reusser in third place. Fourth position went to Elisa Longo Borghini who finished ahead of German Antonia Niedermaier. Bad luck for Kasia Niewiadoma: the Polish rider crashed in the final corner before the finish and crossed the line in sixth place, 59 seconds behind the winner.
When approximately 70 kilometers remained to the finish, Czech rider Kristýna Burlovaá set off in pursuit of the escapees while the main group had to make up 1'30" on the attackers.
As the group approached the Šenčur circuit, the peloton caught the counter-attacker Burlovaá. In the finish zone, the leaders had a forty-second advantage over the group controlled by the Italian riders. Right at the final corner before the finishing straight, Letizia Borghesi crashed, sliding towards the advertising boards: no apparent consequences for the native of Cles.
On the first slopes of the Možjanca climb, the selection began and those remaining at the front were: Kasia Niewiadoma (Poland), Puck Pieterse (Netherlands), Femke de Vries (Netherlands), Demi Vollering (Netherlands), Elisa Longo Borghini (Italy), Marlen Reusser (Switzerland), Juliette Berthet Labous (France). The Swiss rider, world time trial champion, changed pace several times on the climb trying to drop her rivals, but her attempt did not have the desired effect and shortly after the leading group was reinforced.
Choosing the moment perfectly, Danish rider Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and German Franziska Koch surprised everyone with a counter-attack, taking the lead for several kilometers. At the start of the final lap came another tactical reversal: the escapees were caught and Femke de Vries (Netherlands), Noemi Rüegg (Switzerland) and Liane Lippert (Germany) tried to gain an advantage, but the group of title contenders regrouped shortly after.
The subsequent attack by Puck Pieterse "paved the way" for Demi Vollering's solo breakaway, which immediately gained a significant advantage and managed to maintain it despite being chased by a group of strong finishers like Reusser, Longo Borghini and Niedermaier, along with Niewiadoma.
A remaining buffer of 15 seconds allowed Vollering to enjoy yet another triumph in a golden season. Like the medal she hung around her neck and which this evening at the Dutch team hotel they will celebrate together with Pieterse's silver medal.
