With a photo showing him in the box area at the European Championships in Slovenia and a lengthy post that we present in full below, Paolo Slongo, one of the most experienced and respected technicians in the peloton, offers a reflection on race communication methods. The debate is open.
European Championships.
In modern cycling, where we now have radios, data, watts, GPS, real-time analysis and who knows what other technological wizardry...
at the Championships, however, according to UCI regulations, race radios cannot be used to communicate with athletes. 😅
So we go back to basics: the good old blackboard. 📝😂
The tactical plan is strictly "secret"...so secret that all the riders in the group can read it! 🤣
And here, between a laugh and an improvised blackboard, a reflection comes naturally: are we really sure this is the right direction for cycling's evolution? 🤔
On one hand, we keep pushing more and more towards technology, data, precision and analysis of every detail... on the other hand, when race time comes, we go back to communicating with a blackboard at the roadside. 😂
Perhaps the true evolution of cycling isn't having more and more technology, but understanding when to use it and when to leave room for instinct, race reading and the rider's ability to make decisions. In the meantime, though... let's write big on the blackboard, because the "secret" is visible to everyone anyway! 😜🚴♂️
