STORIES FROM THE PAST. LUCIO COLZANI, SMALL GREAT STAR OF CYCLOCROSS. GALLERY

Let us move the calendar back a bit – quite a bit actually – to remember the cyclist, cyclocross specialist above all, Lucio Colzani. He was born in Rogeno, now in the province of Lecco but, at that time, it belonged to Como, on August 20, 1943 and, as was the common custom of the era, already at a very young age, he felt attracted to the bicycle, first as a means of entertainment and, immediately after, as an instrument, always with enjoyment, to cultivate his sporting passion which he later continued with his work activity as a bicycle mechanic with the proposal of "Colzani" racing bikes and two-wheeled vehicles of various types.

A passionate, competent, quiet mechanic, who dedicated himself with equal commitment and passion to racing models and those for leisure, bicycles of all kinds, in his characteristic "cyclist's workshop" with frames, wheels, work tools and meeting point for enthusiasts of different ages in the area. An area between Como and Lecco, very close to Erba which is somewhat the distribution hub, the obligatory passage for the always numerous enthusiasts coming from the areas around Milan, seeking the climbs arranged in the "Larian triangle" with specific emphasis on the Ghisallo pass, from the easier side of Magreglio, a locality always of great emotional appeal for multiple, historical reasons that reside there, and spectacular panoramic views of the lake below, Lake Como, in its central part.

The locality of Rogeno, near Merone, is also known for the late Giacomo Fornoni, originally from Bergamo but adopted by Brianza, gold medalist of the 100-kilometer quartet at the 1960 Rome Olympics with Livio Trapè, Ottavio Cogliati and Antonio "Toni" Bailetti.

Fornoni – el Giacum – was a powerful all-rounder, later a professional until 1968, always wearing the blue-chamois jersey of Molteni, known in the environment as "the master," then owner of the very popular restaurant "I Cinque Cerchi," in tribute to his greatest victory. A young man in spirit, with joking tones, he was the friend of another world champion from Rome 1960, in team pursuit, with the Milanese Marino Vigna, the Venetians Mario Vallotto and Luigi Testa. Another member was Luigi Arienti from Desio, "el Luis," friend and associate of Fornoni, a joking and well-matched couple both in their cycling career and later in life.

Let us return to the competitive experience of Lucio Colzani, known in the area as "el Colzanin" for his overall small physical build, not exactly that of a giant, as remembered by Giulio Mauri, a journalist who followed Como cycling with various protagonists writing for the daily newspaper "la Provincia."

The beginning of Colzani's cycling experience dates back to 1959 racing on the road and, in the winter season, regularly competing in cyclocross. On the road, wearing the glorious jersey of U.C. Comense 1887, he collected various satisfactions competing at the top level with those who, at the time, were considered the strongest road cyclists in Lombardy, and beyond.

And, in the development of his competitive career, it is nonetheless in the specialty of cyclocross, much practiced at the time, that he achieves his best results wearing the Italian national jersey multiple times at world championships obtaining good placements despite, often, the strategy dictated by technical commissioners, provided for him support functions to the designated captain of the Italian squad. A regret that he still remembers and expresses with polite frankness. There are 52 victories acquired – between road and cyclocross –: strong competition, we speak of the great Renato Longo, of the Valdaosta professor Franco Vagneur and others still, denies him the satisfaction of winning a tricolor jersey in cyclocross where, four times he is silver, five times he wins the bronze medal. He consoles himself with three Lombard champion titles.

In 1975 the combative "Colzanin," certainly not a colossus but animated by peculiar tenacity and grit, turns professional with the Tuscan team, from Prato, the Magniflex of brothers Franco and Giuliano Magni, a formation with top-level road names.

An experience that did not bring the expected results and which led Colzani to focus his attention on the activity of bicycle mechanic which he already alternated with that of competitor which forced him to wake up daily at early morning hours to train at first light and then dedicate himself, body and soul, to the "workshop" for many hours. He had the collaboration of his wife Erminia, skilled at assembling wheels.

Having reached retirement age, he "closed up shop" as they say in many Lombard areas but he continued – and continues – to follow cycling with undiminished passion.
