A surprise breakthrough by Cedrik Bakke Christophersen in the final stage of the Arctic Race of Norway 2026. The Norwegian from Unibet Rose Rockets claimed the Sortland-Narvikfjellet stage (190 kilometers) by attacking with perfect timing just before the final kilometer and holding off the chase group in the closing meters, which was controlled by Ludovico Crescioli (Polti VisitMalta) ahead of the midnight sun yellow jersey wearer Thomas Silva (XDS Astana).

The latter, thanks to third place, secured the overall classification with a 14-second advantage over Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Intermarché) and 25 seconds over Alessandro Pinarello (NSN).

THE RACE

Unlike the previous race days, it took until the first categorized climb of the day (won by Axel Källberg of Lucky Sport Cycling Team) to see some riders manage to escape the peloton.

The most determined to launch an attack was Henrik Pedersen (Uno-X Mobility) who, first solo and then alongside teammate Ådne Holter and Anders Foldager (Jayco AlUla), formed the day's breakaway. The three, chased only briefly by five other riders, managed to build a three-minute advantage before the group, adjusting its pace, began to contain the margin at acceptable levels and subsequently whittle it down.

Crucial in this regard was the work of XDS Astana, Picnic PostNL, and Pinarello Q36.5 which, with 10 kilometers remaining, after passing the intermediate sprint at Øyjord (first Foldager), reduced the deficit to just 50 seconds—too little for the three leaders to hope to complete their action, which indeed fizzled out 3,200 meters from the finish when, on the first slopes of the final climb, Gachignard first caught up and then dropped the trio.

The Frenchman from TotalEnergies was kept within no more than 10 seconds by the group for almost the entire climb, but when he began to dream of pulling it off from behind, just before the flamme rouge, Christophersen exploded like lightning, quickly catching and passing him. Alone at the front, the Norwegian maintained such a strong pace that even in the final steep hundred meters no one could close the gap: with 3 seconds over the lead group controlled by Crescioli, the 24-year-old from Tønsberg thus claimed his first professional victory, the second considering the one he achieved three years ago at Visit South Aegean Islands.

Behind him (who rose thanks to his victory to eighth place in the standings) and the Italian from Polti VisitMalta (on the podium thanks to Giovanni Lonardi, first in the points classification), Silva controlled the situation with extreme ease and, closing in third place, sealed his yellow jersey: on the podium the Uruguayan (at his eighth seasonal success and also wearing the white jersey as best young rider) stood alongside Van Eetvelt (fourth today) and Pinarello (5th of the day), taking home his second overall victory as a professional after the Tour of Hainan earlier this year.

Italy thus confirms itself as the nation with the most third-place finishes in the history of the event (4 with the one achieved by the native of Conegliano) and closes off an absolutely positive edition of the Norwegian race, given that, again thanks to the young Italian former Bardiani rider, there are now 5 Italian riders capable of reaching the final podium at these latitudes, while Lonardi (the fourth Italian to secure a stage victory in Arctic Race history) has become the third tricolor athlete to wear the leader's jersey (the other two were Gianni Moscon in 2016 and Alberto Dainese in 2023) and the first ever from these parts to claim the points classification.
