Einer Rubio's Tour de France came to an end in the most painful way possible, on one of the most iconic mountains in world cycling. The consequences were severe: immediate withdrawal from the Tour de France, numerous facial traumas and approximately twenty stitches needed to close the wounds sustained in the accident.

«Several days have already passed since the accident at the Tour de France and, as they say, you have to make the best of it - the Colombian wrote on Instagram - No one expects a race to end this way, but it's simply what happened. We cannot change the past, but we can learn from situations like these and work to prevent them in the future».

Rubio does not limit himself to looking back, but also launches an important reflection on race safety. The Colombian emphasizes how such episodes should represent a starting point for improving the protection of riders and spectators.

«Things could have gone differently with more effective guardrails on climbs, stricter controls on vehicular traffic and spectators who are more attentive and aware that during a race the safety of both cyclists and spectators along the road is at risk».

Words written without controversy, but with the clarity of someone who has personally experienced an episode that could have had even more serious consequences. The accident at Alpe d'Huez has indeed reignited the debate on safety management in major stage races, especially in the most crowded sections of the legendary Tour climbs, where thousands of fans crowd just centimeters from the riders.

Despite the disappointment of a Tour de France interrupted at the decisive moment, Rubio prefers to focus on the positive aspects and the support he has received.

It is the most beautiful message for his fans and for the entire cycling world.
